Bagaceratops rozhdestvenskyi
- "small horned face"
- Cretaceous
- 3 feet long
- 15 pounds
Bagaceratops is known from about two dozen skulls, five of them complete, and some bits of the rest of the skeleton from several juveniles and adults. It is closely related to Protoceratops, but is smaller. Like Protoceratops, this is a desert-dweller, and is often found preserved in desert sandstone, having been overwhelmed by sandstorms or collapsing dunes.
Unlike its horned relatives, Bagaceratops sports a small horn on the snout. It also has a distinctive triangular frill around the neck forming a shield. Another distinction is that it lacks the pointed teeth at the front of the upper jaw, relying instead on its beak to gather food. Despite these features, and the fact that it came later, Bagaceratops is considered more primitive than Protoceratops.
