I think the reason why wood is being abandoned is that it requires constant maintenance and regular repaints to remain in good shape. And every extra maintenance means less $$$ for the owner, so... Yeah.

Same. I call this style RetroModern. Love the blocky forms, angled shed roofs, daring siding angles and sometimes tall tall tall windows. I wonder if people still live there though, The building on the right seems to be having severe structural issues with it's porches.

They're still inhabited. Homes are too expensive here to leave anything empty. They were built in the 1980s though, so I wouldn't doubt that those porches will need rebuilding soon

These were nice once but like my sister and BIL's place they aren't aging well. Heck, my place is in need of restoration and it's only about 35 years old.

Yeah at some point people just stopped building practical long lasting houses, and architecture became about making a statement. For example in our region traditionally if you were building a wooden house you'd have the roof overhang it by at least a foot, to keep water from running down the siding and rotting it. You'd also have a simple peaked roof to minimize joints and prevent leaks. They'd kinda stopped doing that by the 1970s

All true! I had a modular built back in 1987-'88 and it's showing its age.

These types of buildings always remind me of those late 70's early 80's movies I saw on television as a child. The quirky low budget and made for TV things they showed in the early hours on the weekend.
