:) This little hornworm was found today on a branch of birch - an invader! The branch was clipped as feeding fodder for the 'pillar family to feast on at work. There are always invading cats on our feeding branches, but I thought Hortense was special since s/he wouldn't get off my finger and s/he is a hornworm - which get to be quite large.
So I brought her home for
vombatiformes! Today s/he's about 1.3 cm. If it's not too annoying, I think I'll keep updating every now and again. I'd like to track his growth and maybe ID him when he's big enough to have more defining characteristics.
Right now I'm guessing she's a Blinded Sphynx (Paonias excaecatus) ! If that's right, then s/he'll get up to 7.5 cm, so lots of growing to do :D

I KNEW THAT WAS A HORNWORM BEFORE I READ THE DESCRIPTION.
I had never seen them before until a few years ago, we put this tomato plant out on the patio and I saw one small one crawling on the plant. I thought it was cute. Then later on, there were around a dozen of them, and they were HUGE and FAT and my new reaction was AHHHHHHH. I wondered where in the world they came from, since I'd never seen them before, and suddenly there were so many. I think they appeared out of thin air. The magically appearing hornworm.
