A Thursday Prompt story

Prompt: cunning
‘M’ dismissed the last of his aides and sat back for a moment, thinking carefully. Someone was attempting to blackmail the Foreign Minister, but despite Balakrishnan’s fears that he would turn her discomfort to his advantage the roebuck’s curiosity was piqued.
He rechecked the anti-intrusion devices in his office and on his communications lines before saying, “Mei.” A porcine avatar wearing a military uniform appeared in the center of the room. “Indulge me for a while, and speculate – no, not like that,” he said as the avatar changed to a quite handsome-looking roe doe wearing filmy silks that left nothing to the imagination. “As you were, please.” The sow returned and he said, “Better. A member of the government is the target of extortion.”
Mei blinked. “There are currently several hundred thousand members of the government, Director. Most are being manipulated to some degree by the others. You yourself are currently pulling the strings on – “
“Yes, I’m well aware,” the roebuck said dryly. “Have a look at this,” and he gave her access to the recorded exchange Balakrishnan had with her blackmailer. After a few moments he said, “I would value your insight.”
The avatar put a paw to her chin. “Changing her endorsement of the military spending increase is a small matter in the short term,” she said. “It would cause gossip about why she changed her earlier public stance on the issue, and it would be assumed that she had been manipulated.”
‘M’ nodded. “Go on, please. Long term ramifications?”
“Whoever has reached out to the Minister will doubtless try again with more important matters,” the sow said. “While the Admiral-General will welcome the spending increase, he walks a fine line between realizing the plans for fleet modernization and provoking the Kashlani or the Colonial Government.”
An eyebrow rose. “’Or?’”
“Forgive me. And-slash-or.”
“Indeed.” Hoof-hard fingernails tapped together. “Avril is assisting Admiral Gromov?” he asked, naming another of the three strategic planning AIs.
“Yes, Director.”
‘M’ nodded. “Sensible.” He sat up; if he had a tail, the appendage would be swishing slightly. “Thank you, Mei. Dismissed,” and the avatar vanished.
For several minutes, the roebuck sat in silence before a smirk twisted his muzzle. He stood up to prepare a cup of tea, shaking his head and muttering softly, “Too clever by half . . . “
