Phango is born with one blind eye, and this causes his clan to despise him as worthless and weak, often neglecting him and even physically abusing him. While he is still a young cub, he is “accidentally” kicked into a deep pond by a cubsitter one day, but he survives and crawls to shore further away. Phango never forgot this, and from that day on, he was determined to get revenge on his clan for what they did to him.
As he matured, Phango became a very skilled hunter, making up for his half-blindness with a very strong sense of smell. When he reached adulthood, Phango returned to his childhood home and sought out every single member of his former clan. The first he finds is his former babysitter who kicked him into the pond all those years ago, and Phango attacks her without hesitation. The battle is long and hard, but it ends with her lying dead at his feet. And Phango doesn't stop there, as he tracks down the rest of his former clan, using his strong sense of smell to his advantage. All of them are soon found and killed one by one.
With his former clan now dead, Phango is left feeling empty afterwards. Revenge had been his only purpose, and now he had nothing. Still feeling unsatisfied, Phango continues to kill without reason or need, causing many animals in his territory to live in fear of him. The sadistic leopard kills predator and prey alike, regardless of whether he needed food or not, and soon gains a reputation of eating his prey while it was still alive. He briefly finds companionship with a naïve young leopardess, but she flees as soon as she learns just how violent and cruel he was. At one point, he becomes obsessed with trying to kill a strange half-striped zebra colt that had been born in the area. Since he had only half of his sight, Phango got it in his head that he would become "whole" if he ate an animal that had only half of what it was supposed to have. He eventually chases the young zebra up a cliff, but the pursuit results in Phango falling to his death.
And thus, the bloodthirsty killer's reign of terror finally came to an end.
So, there’s this South African animated film called “Khumba”, which is about a half-striped zebra colt who goes on a quest to earn his missing stripes. It’s an okay movie, but I thought that Phango was a pretty cool villain, so I of course had to incorporate him into my TLK universe.
