It looks good design wise... but the shading seems... odd to me, like reaaally really shiny.

I'd say you're on the right track, you just need to keep in mind a couple things: your light source and the form of your subject. Especially with the light source, consider what's being hit by the light and what isn't. I read some good advice about covering your subject with a two-tone elliptical gradient to see where the light would generally fall on.
