“I’m sorry.”
The young camel girl averted her eyes from the two leopard boys, her tail swishing. Her paws were behind her back, and she was all too aware of her father was looking on from a distance. “I’m sorry,” she repeated. “I shouldn’t repeat rumors, ‘specially if they’re lies.” She raised her gaze to look at the boys. “C-Can you forgive me?”
The older, Vladmir, was looking searchingly at her face. The younger, Farukh, smiled and said, “I forgive you, Marcella.” After a moment Vladmir nodded in agreement and the two boys gathered the girl into a hug to show that there were no hard feelings.
From a distance Lord Shor exhaled a breath he hadn’t been aware he’d been holding. Beside him and his wife stood the boys’ mother, and Lady Alys looked pleased as well, giving Shor another reason to feel relieved.
“Well, that’s done,” Alys said. “At least as far as they know. What have you been able to find, Lord Anastas?”
Shor glanced at his wife. “She heard it from one of my maids, Lady Alys,” Lady Yasmina said. “She heard it from one of the guard.”
“I see. Where did the guard hear it?” the leopardess asked.
“He made it up,” Anastas replied. Alys raised an eyebrow and the camel added, “The guard commander had disciplined him repeatedly for similar infractions.” He met Alys’ gaze unflinchingly. “He’s been punished.”
“How?”
“He was flogged in front of the rest of the guard,” Lady Yasmina said, “before being shot in the head.” Lord Anastas nodded.
“Very good,” Alys said. “Maybe it’ll encourage loose tongues to wag a little less where young ears might hear them and repeat their lies.” Farukh came running up to her and she asked, “Yes, Farukh?”
“Marcella said she’s sorry,” Farukh said. “Can we go play in the garden?” His mother glanced at the two camels, who nodded; she nodded and the young leopard grinned and ran off.
“Children,” she said with a genuinely fond smile on her face.
“Yes. They should be cherished,” Yasmina said, “and hopefully they grow up better than us.”
Alys let the implied criticism slide, for now.
