On December 13th, 1636 the fist Muster Occured. The Massachusetts Bay Colonies realized that they needed a larger organized military as the local militias grew in size. They began to have weekly Musters and drilling exercises. These units lasted to the Battles of Lexington and Concord, through the Civil War, World War Two and four of them exist today, including the 1-181 Infantry Battalion which I am, and just returned from Afghanistan with. The 181 traces its lineage all the way back to the First Muster, along with three other units, making them the oldest in the United States Army.
