Here, I'm having fun using Hero Forge to create Athena, the Olympian goddess of wisdom, as an anthropomorphic owl. According to common depictions, she carries a spear and a shield with the head of Medusa on it. The helmet is in front of her, as I couldn't depict it on her head.
Mythology (as I know it)
Once upon a time, Zeus, the ruler of Olympus, had his first wife, Metis. She was an Oceanid, daughter of Oceanus and Tethys, and known for her wisdom and intelligence.
She became pregnant by Zeus. But then Gaia, the Earth Mother (grandmother of Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hestia, Demeter, and Hades), prophesied that if Metis bore him a son, he would become so powerful that he could overthrow him from the throne.
Zeus didn't want to end up like his father Cronus and his grandfather Uranus, so he had to devise a ruse to prevent Metis from bearing his dreaded son.
He asked her to entertain him with her powers of transfiguration. And Metis granted his wish, initially transforming into powerful creatures, such as a lioness, a bear, and a wild boar. Zeus was very pleased with Metis's shapeshifting abilities until he challenged her to transform into something smaller.
And so Metis indeed began transforming into smaller creatures, including a mouse and even a fly. She even managed to transform herself into a drop of water and landed on Zeus's palm.
Zeus acted quickly, letting the drop of water fall into his throat and swallowing it.
Zeus and Metis became one, and from then on, Zeus possessed Metis's wisdom.
Some time passed, and Zeus was plagued by excruciating headaches. Zeus called Hephaestus, the god of fire and blacksmithing, and commanded him to split the skull so that the pain could finally end.
Hephaestus obeyed the command and took his axe (in some versions it was a hammer) and split Zeus's skull.
A woman emerged from the skull, fully clothed, wearing a helmet, carrying a spear and shield, and letting out a triumphant scream.
Athena, the goddess of wisdom, was born and became Zeus's favorite daughter.
The prophesied son who would overthrow Zeus was never born.
Athena became not only the goddess of wisdom, but also the goddess of poetry, the arts, and strategic warfare.
* Athena and Poseidon fought over control of Attica. Athena won by planting the first olive tree, while Poseidon created a saltwater spring. The city was named after Athena: Athens.
* Athena never indulged in love affairs and vowed chastity and celibacy. But when the blacksmith god Hephaestus desired her, she rejected him. Then, some of his semen splashed on her leg. Disgusted, she wiped her leg with a cloth and threw it to the earth. But through Gaia, the Earth Mother, the cloth was fertilized, and a child crawled out of it (sometimes described as having a snake's tail instead of legs).
Athena adopted the child that emerged from her cloth and named him Erichthonius.
Erichthonius grew up and became king of Athens. Erichthonius is considered an important king of Athens, who introduced important inventions such as the four-horse chariot and protected the city from enemies. His story is closely intertwined with the self-image of the Athenians, as they venerated him as their ancestor and founder of their city.
* Arachne, renowned for her exceptional weaving skills, challenged Athena, the goddess of wisdom and crafts, to a weaving contest. Both women wove elaborate tapestries. Athena's work depicted the gods in their majesty, while Arachne's tapestry depicted the love affairs of the gods (especially Zeus). Although Arachne's work was considered equal or even superior, Athena, enraged by her hubris, transformed her into a spider.
* Athena transformed Medusa, a priestess of her temple, into a snake-haired monster after Poseidon seduced Medusa and had sexual intercourse with her in the temple. Athena saw this as a desecration of her temple. (Ovid, however, describes Medusa as being raped by Poseidon.) A completely different version says that Medusa and her sisters Stheno and Euryale were once beautiful women who boasted of being more beautiful than Athena. This made Athena so angry that she transformed the three sisters into their monstrous forms, whose mere gaze turns every living being to stone.
* Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite wanted Paris, the Trojan prince raised as a shepherd, to decide who was the most beautiful of them. As a sign of his decision, he was to give the one he declared the most beautiful a golden apple (brought by Eris, the goddess of discord). Athena offered to make Paris the wisest man in the world (in another version, she had offered him military success). But to Athena and Hera's chagrin, Paris chose Aphrodite as the most beautiful because she had promised him the love of the most beautiful woman: Helen. Paris fell in love with Helen, abducted her from her husband Menelaus, and sparked the Trojan War.
* Athena supported the Greeks in the Trojan War by providing strategic advice and assistance to heroes such as Odysseus and Achilles.
* In order to get Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, to actively investigate his father, Athena took on the form of Mentor.
* When Odysseus returned to Ithaca after his wanderings of several years, Athena transformed him into an old beggar so that he could find out, unrecognized, who was still loyal to him.
