1. Nest Building
Adult Grokes choose isolated ice caves in mountains or on coasts with a frosty climate.
The entrance to the cave is often covered with snow or ice, so that the temperature inside does not exceed 0°C.
The nest is a shallow depression in the ice, lined with small pieces of ice crystals and snow (sometimes decorated with small stones or shells found by the female).
The nest is usually built by a pair of Grokes – the male secures the entrance, and the female arranges the interior.
2. Egg Laying
The female lays 1 to 3 large eggs several days apart.
The eggs have a hard, translucent shell with a delicate snowflake pattern.
The interior of the shell is slightly phosphorescent – this is the result of a chemical reaction that gently warms the egg from the inside. After laying the eggs, the female covers them with a layer of ice chips and fluff to hide them from predators.
3. Incubation Period
This lasts about 6 weeks.
During this time, adult Grokes rarely leave the nest – one individual hunts and patrols, while the other warms the eggs with its body (although Grokes are cold-loving creatures, eggs require a higher temperature than the surrounding environment).
Adults communicate with low, vibrating grunts, which are said to accelerate embryonic development.
4. Hatching
Groke chicks, called Buklęty, hatch from the eggs naked, rounded, and very soft to the touch.
They have large eyes and short limbs with tiny claws, used primarily for clinging to their parents.
They can walk immediately, but are clumsy and often fall onto their backs. In the first few days, they emit high-pitched, melodic sounds resembling a combination of squeaking and whistling – the complete opposite of the somber humming of adults.
5. Raising the Young
The young are fed soft, chewed morsels of meat and fish, which the parents spit directly into their wide mouths.
During the first weeks, the fur begins to thicken, and the color changes from light cream to shades of gray or blue.
The young often play in the nest – rolling on ice shards, biting each other's noses, and hiding in their shells.
During this phase, they are at their most adorable – small, chubby, and eternally curious.
6. Growing Up
At about 6 months of age, the young are the size of an adult fox.
The fur darkens, the muzzle begins to take on a sharp shape, and their gaze becomes more serious. The melodic sounds disappear, replaced by characteristic "buzzes" and grunts.
During this period, the young learn to hunt and defend their territory, and their behavior becomes more territorial.
7. Adulthood
Grokes reach their full adult size and appearance at the age of 2.
From these small, sweet little balls, they grow into tall, powerful figures with piercing gazes.
Adult Grokes are solitary or form very aloof pairs.
In contacts with other species, they have a reputation for being cold, menacing, and unpredictable – making the sight of a baby Groke a rare and special privilege.
