"Lord LightningSword, you ave' a visitor, sir! Shall I let her in?" James's groom & driver shouted from the gates to James's big brick manor where the groom stood awaiting permission to allow a teen girl on horseback dressed in armor.
"Please do, Alfred! I'm just grabbing the kids and letting everyone outside to play, please show her in!" James bellowed back from the double doors of his home, wearing his usual finery.
"Come in, miss. Welcome to LightningSword Manor." Alfred said, undoing the gate lock and chains and standing aside for the girl to ride in, who scoffed lowly.
"You don't remember me. I've been here before." She said lowly. Alfred cocked his head at her, indeed not recognizing the youth, who rode on ahead rather than explain herself to him. The girl wore golden flashy armor and bore several weapons about her and on her mare, who was chestnut to match the teen's twin braids that fell from her helmeted head as James and his five kids came out to greet her followed by a hoard of overexcited orphans who ran about towards the huge jungle gym the couple had built for them in the back yard. James did recognize the girl, after a moment of concentrated squinting and thought.
"Natalie? Oh honey, I never got to thank you for assisting in my rescue last week, and so very well done, I've heard. Welcome, please make yourself at home. You remember my wonderful kids? This is Henrietta, Bruce, Simon, Martin, and Tommy, our newest welcome addition. Kids, this is my dear old friend Natalie Baker. Oh, congratulations on your newly appointed knighthood, my dear! How simply splendid! My, is this one elven steel?" James remarked at the backup blade sheathed on her horse; he too loved weapons, and had been her teacher as well as friend long ago.
"It is, good eye, James." Natalie said as she hopped off her mare and watched James's kids all curtsy and bow their greetings except Tom, who watched her with a skeptical frown and arms crossed. Natalie deduced Tom must have been an adoptee as he was the same age as the couple's quadruplets but she knew they only had four children. "Thanks. I can't stay long, I'm on call. Oh, hey, Lonely. Thank you, I will." Natalie took food from the offered tray of sandwiches and snacks James's loving mule wife had brought out after a kindly curtsy from the gentlewoman mare and she and a maid served the kids, her husband and Natalie fresh lemonade to accompany the treats she'd brought.
"Oh, thank you, honey, how very sweet of you. Mmm, good. Sure was nice of mama to bring lunch, huh guys? Please come here, sugar." James cuddled Lonely close as she obeyed happily and sat by him and he kissed her forehead and lips, his big hands rubbing her arm with much affection. Henrietta was clearly fascinated by the young female knight as were the boys, but she ran from inside bearing a picture book to her parents, who held out their arms to her despite enjoying lunch.
"Papa, mommy, can we read?" Henrietta pleaded. James gave the girl a tender beam as did his wife.
"Why of course we can honey, anytime is story time. Story time, boys! Anyone who wants to hear a story, please gather around." James called warmly through his hands. Bruce excused himself to his adopted brother Tom and joined his siblings by his parents as James and Lonely took turns narrating the favored book to their enraptured brood, who listened intensely and gawked at the illustrated pages as they were read to. The family snuggled each other sweetly as they all listened & the parents read aloud. This left Tom to grill a silently eating Natalie who leaned on her grazing mare.
"Do you kill shit with these?" Tom asked, trying to grab the hilt of her holstered backup sword from its place on her saddle.
"Don't touch that, OK? Yeah, I do." Natalie replied flatly. Tom bristled before he ran off to climb his favorite tree in his adoptive parent's big yard.
"Yeah, I don't believe you're a real knight anyway, everyone knows there are no girl knights or soldiers." Tom muttered as he ran off.
"Whatever." Natalie mumbled, with a slight teenage eyeroll. Natalie hung out while Tom played within eyesight and James and his wife finished story time with their other four kids, who again greeted Natalie politely as they ran up to her and James smiled happily as he closed the story book and gave his wife another smooch. James boosted both his daughter Henrietta and oldest son Bruce onto his massive brawny shoulders fondly and they both laughed, enjoying the view and finding it fun.
"Papa, may I please ask Natalie questions about being a girl knight?" Henrietta requested.
"Sure, honey. What do you want to ask her, sweetie?" James smiled as his two youngest played about his legs and his wife and their maid again offered seconds of lemonade and lunch to all present. Lonely paused to listen with a kind smile Natalie's way, clearly wishing her to feel welcome at their home.
"Miss Natalie, knight, miss, are there any other lady knights like you? This is just, so cool. I'd never be so brave as you." Henrietta wondered out loud with awe. Natalie laughed quickly.
"I've only ever met two in all my travels. It was hard to find a lord to serve, as most didn't take me seriously between my sex and my age. I'm in the service of King Incendia The Mighty." Natalie replied.
"Oooh." James's four kids all gasped with wonder.
"Oh hey, sweetie, isn't that who Dan serves?" James asked his wife, who nodded excitedly.
"Oh yes my love, it is! How splendid Natalie, Danny simply loves serving Lord Incendia, and reports him as fair and dignified. It is so very lovely to see you again, Miss Natalie. I also extend my warmest congrats on your knighthood. Have you run into Danny, is he hale?" Lonely inquired sweetly.
James gave a little jealous throat clearing at the mention of his one and only actually friendly rival and added,
"He is my love, he was one addition to the army that helped to free me. He and Natalie fought side by side exceptionally well, according to even my father." James told Lonely warmly, who thanked him tenderly and curtsied to him with polite subservience. He gave his submissive bride a doting smile of adoration in reply.
"I hate your dad, no offense, James. Crusty old windbag." Natalie muttered. James blushed and Lonely shot her man a sympathetic and kind smile as she gave his enormous bicep a loving, reassuring gentle little squeeze and looked up at him with comfort.
"He's not everyone's cup of tea, that's for sure." James admitted sheepishly.
"I like grandad. Hey, do you wanna sword fight us? Brucey and I both take fencing along with papa. We're pretty good." Simon requested.
"I just so happen to have a rapier on me. Let's see if your boasting holds mettle." Natalie challenged, withdrawing her sword from her saddle as the boys excitedly ran inside to fetch theirs. James beamed and snuggled Henrietta and Martin, who loved watching their brothers quickly fencing with Natalie, who told them the story of how she met their father.
"Did your dad ever tell you we met when he saved my life? I was about your ages, and he found me with a broken leg and used his angel powers to heal it. We were pals ever since then, and he taught me to ride and fight with blades just like he did."
"Really?" Bruce gasped in wonder, cursing as Natalie's safety-pointed rapier touched him and cost him a point.
"Papa, you saved her? Our daddy is always so heroic." Henrietta giggled lovingly, snuggling James as she kissed his cheek. James blushed and grinned hugely, eating up the attention from his beloved kids.
"Aww shucks, Henri, thanks, honey. Yes, that is how we met. Haha, those sure were good times, huh Nat?" James chortled with fondness, watching only Simon still fencing now as Bruce had been bested despite his high skill level.
"Yep. Oh, I need to go though, King Incendia is summoning me for a quest. I can't keep my lord waiting." Natalie quickly resheathed her tipped rapier, mounting her mare in a fast swing: her dragon-shaped gold necklace glowed green as a summons signal.
"Papa, can we go with her, and help her, all of us? Oh please, can we?" Bruce pled, Simon joining him at James's seated side in an instant. James guffawed, finding his eager sons endearing.
"Well now, I have no objection to it if Natalie approves, but let's also ask momma how she feels too, one sec, boys." James blew Lonely a kiss and motioned her over with a smile, and she held her petticoat and gown & pranced over, sitting by his side and giving her attention. Natalie waited impatiently, tolerating this out of courtesy to James but unwilling to wait long.
"My love, the boys wish to accompany Natalie on a mission with my protection and aid, we'd all help her. How do you feel about that, sweetheart?" James's voice grew very tender at the end and he gently stroked her jaw with his hand. Lonely eyed him with eyes shiny with love.
"Ooh my love, how very exciting. I wish you fun, just please be very careful! I will remain here with the others and anticipate your wonderful return. Boys, please obey your dad while with Natalie, my dears, & have a fun time on your adventure with him, my darlings! I love you!" Lonely kissed both Simon and Bruce, who hugged her and their two other siblings.
"We will be good, honest, ma! We'll obey dad just like at work, when I'm dad's scout and Monty is grandad's apprentice. Right, dad?" Bruce asked, as Simon nodded eagerly. James laughed fondly and messed up both boy's hair, which made them chuckle. Lonely smiled adoringly at her kids.
"Yes my love, these guys are very good at listening, they've never given me or dad problems at work, always follow instructions." James stood up and embraced and deeply kissed his wife for a long time, making her nearly swoon for enjoyment, and then cuddled his daughter and other son, who decided to stay behind with their mom despite their fascination. "Sweetie, I'm just summoning Magnus to protect you while I'm away, we'll be home soon honey, and I have my magic mirror if you need anything at all, my sweet beautiful flower. We'll all stop at the blacksmith and get you outfitted boys, myself too. Natalie, I'll make up the delay using my dragon form and fly us all to your king's realm with you all in my claws. Does that sound permissable?" James asked his young friend politely.
"Yes, let's go now. Lonely, thank you for lunch. Nice to meet you kids again. Hyah!" Natalie took off on her mare and James's groom, who'd been listening, brought James's draft stallion in his equine armor and the two boys ponies to ride, and all three males saddled up, James called to his wife and remaining kids with a loving wave as the three trailed Natalie on their horses, James pulled up alongside the climbing tree on his way out, his reins bundled as his strong steed snorted and drooled.
"Tommy, would you like to join us?" James asked in a manly, stalwart voice, his expression pleased and proud.
"I wanna go do cool shit with you guys, yeah, but I don't like her," Tom pointed at Natalie fading into the distance with James's two boys riding behind slowly waiting on their dad, "I'll stay here and help Magnus guard the girls and wimpy Marty." Tom replied. James patted Tom's cheek affectionately.
"Good lad, I'm leaving you and Magnus in charge now. Please be nice to my little Marty though, okay, tough guy? I love you. Hyah, Diablo!" James called to his steed who whinnied and took off with huge shod hooves thundering and flying up bits of soil, and Lonely, Henrietta and Martin watched wistfully as the four rode away feeling happy for them but a little worried too & already eager for their return home.
