Okay, to answer your questions:
You buy it and you own the design (the art is still mine, but the design and the character are yours). You can basically do whatever you want with it. The markings and general shape are what you're buying, so it might be best if you left them close to how they are shown, but a bit of modifying them (the markings) to suite your tastes wouldn't do any harm. :3 They can be males or females or neuter or herm.. whatever you want.

They bought it. ^.^; But don't worry, there should be similar ones coming out soonishly. (It's an idea that I've fallen in love with, and until I get it right, I'll probably just keep trying and offering them up for adoption. XD;;;)
