You had completely fallen out of touch with yourself lately. You’d fallen out of touch with reality. You didn’t know what caused it or how to go about it. Every time you looked in the mirror, you didn’t recognize what you saw. You couldn’t recognize your own friends, your own family. All of them just looked like strangers. Everything in the world looked wrong. You couldn’t figure out why. You didn’t know why it happened either. Your whole life up until this point had been normal and now…all of a sudden…it was all wrong.
You paced back and forth inside of your house, as you tended to do a lot nowadays. Every second that passed marked another where you were utterly, hopelessly lost. Lost in your own mind, lost in your own home.
Eventually you gave up on trying to set the mess of your mind straight and just plopped down into an armchair by a window. There you stared longingly at the contents of a plant pot that sat on said windowsill.
Camellias. You didn’t know what it was, but around the same time you’d started to fall away from life, you’d begun to grow a fascination for these flowers. By extension, you’d started feeling a lot more connected to nature itself around the same time (which was quite inconvenient, given you lived in a city with very little greenery).
“Doing alright today, guys?” You hummed to the camellias, gently stroking their petals as if they were a sentient pet. Weirdly, you couldn’t bring yourself to admit that they weren’t actually sentient either. You just…had such an unexplainable, deep connection to this crimson-hued flowers. Hell, at times you swore you could feel the flowers responding to you when you asked them something.
As you stroked the flowers, your fingers began to trail downwards until your hand rested in the dirt. And if you swore that the camellias could respond before, then…
“I’m very excited today! We’re all going home soon!” A small, hushed voice rang inside of your head. You immediately yanked your hand back and nearly tipped the armchair back with how hard you recoiled.
“N-No…” You whimpered. “I d-didn’t just…” But no matter how hard you tried to deny it, you couldn’t help but admit the truth. That plant just spoke to you.
But…why did it feel so natural now that you’ve had time to process it? Why did it feel like you’d had that ability all your life? And what did it mean by ‘going home’? Wasn’t this your home?
Sure, you could barely recognize it, and whenever you walked back to it you felt like you were doing so out of obligation…but it WAS your home, right? It was where you lived, after all…all these feelings you felt…they had to be some sort of illusion, they had to be temporary…There had to be some way to fix whatever was going on with you.
You gulped and stood up, blanky staring around and shaking your head to fruitlessly try and dispel the fog that overtook it.
You…You needed to…what did you need to do? What was going to fix you?
Slowly you turned back to the camellias and placed your fingers back on the dirt. Childishly, you hoped that the plants could provide some answers you desperately needed.
“Do you still not remember, Leshy?” They asked you in a concerned manner.
“You…how c-can you talk to me?”
“Because you’re Leshy!” The camellias chirped. “Ruler of Darkwood, God of Chaos! You’ve always been able to talk to us!”
Slowly, shakily, you took your fingers out. You looked down at your body again as a few thoughts crossed your mind.
(“Why…why does that feel so…right? It…shouldn’t be.”) It couldn’t be. You couldn’t be whoever this Leshy person was. You were just some normal person living in a normal city in a normal world.
But yet…you couldn’t bring yourself to fully dismiss the information. It all felt so right, so natural. You started to shake uncontrollably as you put your fingers back in the pot.
“You’ve always been able to talk to us, but since you’ve been living in a human body, your magic has been dulled. But it looks like you’re getting it back, so your true body is sure to follow!”
You suddenly felt the urge to pull your phone out. Maybe you could talk to one of you family members. Maybe they could help you out, get you committed or something so you could get proper help for all of this.
And once you opened up your contacts app, you remembered something.
About a week ago, for some reason, you’d renamed both your brother and sister’s contacts to ‘Narinder’ and ‘Heket’ respectively. You couldn’t determine why you’d do such a thing for the life of you, or what those names even meant, but you brain just wouldn’t leave you alone until you did change the names…and now you couldn’t even remember your siblings’ names before you changed them.
And now, as if everything that happened thus far wasn’t enough, those names were suddenly a lot more familiar to you now. You could almost envision the people those names belonged to existing within your childhood. Oddly they resembled a cat and a frog?
You shuddered and dropped your phone, your eyes going wide as your breath picked up in speed and intensity.
Why was all this happening?! Why was your mind seemingly unravelling before you?! Why was your world crashing down like this?! WHY-
“Because this isn’t where you belong.” The camellias spoke again. You’d failed to notice that you’d stuck your hand back in their pot again.
“You’re Leshy. Not whoever this human is. It’s time to accept that, it’s time to go home. To your followers, your family.”
You could feel the flowers wrapping their roots around your hand in a comforting, almost maternal manner.
Once the flowers finished talking…it all started to come back to you. Memories of your family; the Bishops of The Old Faith. You remembered all of your powers, all of your followers…all of your memories came flooding back to you.
Slowly, a wide, toothy smile spread across your face as all of your teeth began to grow razor sharp. Your eyes widened with joy as the sclera turned black, while your pupils turned into green crosses. And that wasn’t all, for on your forehead two more eyes of the same colors opened up.
“Hahaha…oh how could I ever forget?” You hissed. “Of course I’m Leshy! Always have been!” The only thing you couldn’t remember right now is why you were in this human body.
Oh well…you supposed it wouldn’t matter for much longer…you felt ripples of energy spread across your being in waves.
You quickly recognized that energy…it was power. The power of chaos.
The first changes occurred to your skin. Its elasticity and softness began to drain as it hardened and dried out, turning a smooth, earthy brown as its texture became barky and scratchy…like that of wood.
In the next moment, you felt pinpricks ripple across your face. Shortly thereafter, leaves began to grow out of your skin. They were a deep, dark green, and shaped similarly to poison ivy. It only took a few seconds for your head to be absolutely covered in leaves. Your human hair was forced out like a population of kudzu choking out native plant life. All while that was going on, your human ears and nose sunk into your skin, resigning themselves to being mere holes and slits respectively.
You chuckled malevolently and felt your growing coat. It was thick, bushy, yet light and soft. Perfectly befitting a bushworm like you. And when your hand trailed over a certain spot, you felt pressure against your skin, followed by something painfully pushing out.
Branches. Your branches. From both sides of your head, three gnarled branches grew and tore their way out our head, splattering skin and blood all over the floor. It hurt like hell, but now that your branches were back…it was so worth it.
You turned to look at yourself in the reflection of a powered-off-TV. Oh…you were looking positively marvelous, and you weren’t even done changing yet!
Another stinging feeling popped up in your head again, but quickly dissipated when a group of spike-like crosses sprouted out of your head.
You opened your mouth to laugh heartily, which allowed you to catch a glimpse of your still-changing mouth. Multiple rows of teeth started to drop down from the roof of your mouth, only stopping centimeters from your throat. To make up for this, your face stretched out slightly to give you a muzzle, and some extra swallowing space. You cheerfully traced your tongue all across your teeth, cherishing their razor-sharp nature. You wondered how you ever lived with those worthless, flat, human teeth.
Your attention was then drawn to your fingers, which began to twitch as they grew and sharpened into beautiful, ferocious claws that were perfect for digging, as well as clawing through prey! You chuckled as you recalled memories of when you were a younger, fledgling god, pouncing on feral deer and clawing through them excitedly…
More leaves began to sprout out of your palms and spread downwards following that. It didn’t stop there, though. Your arms started to widen and grow, as did your chest. Your godly muscle was rapidly packing on, and your shirt was straining to contain it.
You clenched your teeth and looked downwards, watching and waiting with bated breath. Soon, wide rips opened up all across your midsection, allowing your leaves to spill out. And finally, with a loud, satisfying FRRRRRPP!, your shirt burst into fabric confetti.
You sighed in relief and let your wicked claws graze all the way down your abdomen. Oh, how you missed this body…
Your lower half was up next. Your shins broke backwards, but re-fused with your knees quick enough for the pain to not be too severe. This resulted in you being forced onto your toes. Unfortunately, your tail wasn’t back yet, so your balance was severely off, forcing you to lean on your TV to hold yourself up.
Your heels proceeded to fuse with your ankles, and two of your toes on each foot shrank away. But while those toes shrank, your feet started to grow, as well as your remaining toes, which swelled, sharpened, and curled down into wooden talons.
Your socks had already been torn to shreds, but your shoes were putting up more of a fight. Your talons desperately clawed against the leather walls of your footwear, and while they were beginning to poke out through the front, it wasn’t enough just yet.
But thankfully, in only a few more seconds, your talons shredded right out of the fronts of your shoes, and they soon split down the middle, falling to the ground and allowing your beautiful, godly claws to breathe.
You breathed a sigh of relief as you eagerly dragged your claws along the floor. You internally rejoiced in the fact that you’d never have to walk on those stumpy, flat things that humans had again.
While you were focused on that, you failed to notice that your legs were growing as well and had already split through the fabric covering your calves.
You would shift focuses again though, as you felt pressure building up in your backside…and your smile returned as you realized what was coming.
“Haha! Yee-EEES!” You cried as your tail exploded out of your backside, destroying the waistband of your pants in the process. Your legs then grew and destroyed the remaining fabric of your pants at the same time.
You laughed and turned your head to look at your tail. It was long and thick, covered with bushy leaves on the top half, and hard wood on the bottom half. You swung it back and forth jovially, accidentally knocking over the tv in the process. Oh well, you wouldn’t be watching it anymore.
You immediately began to run around the apartment childishly and excitedly, cheering the whole way and tearing up anything in your path. You felt as excited as a child in a candy store. Time flew by as you destroyed everything in sight, all except for the plants, which you gently and paternally set them next to the camellias that started this all.
After a while, you were tuckered out. Well…that was a lie, actually. You still had enough energy to last a lifetime, you had just run out of things to destroy with your claws.
With all that done, you stepped back over to the camellias, which began to glow purple.
“Well, Leshy? Are you ready to come home now?” A voice spoke. A very familiar voice.
“Aheh…of course!” You proclaimed.
In the next moment, one of the plants transfigured into a bright-green ball of light, then changed shape into the Green Crown.
You slowly and gently picked up the object in your hands. It looked right into your eyes, then bent its top half forward in a nodding motion, as if to say ‘Salutations’.
“Heh…good to see you too, old friend.” You said as you placed the crown on your head.
And in an instant, the world around you began to warp, devolving into a mess of colors and lights as the crown worked its magic.
While it was bringing you back home, it was also returning your bishop garb. Tough, black leather pants started to materialize and cover your legs, followed by a sleeveless top of the same texture and color. Such attire was perfect for gardening.
The most important part of your outfit would come next though, for out of the miasma that surrounded you, your robe would appear and drape itself around your shoulders.
The world around you started to reform, shaping itself into tall, gothic, moss-covered walls and pillars, and cracked-stone floors. You realized two things; one, you had regained your immense height, and two, you were back in your temple. Before you could rejoice at announcing your return to your followers, you heard a voice behind you.
“Welcome back, brother.” That voice caused any chaos and pompousness in you to evaporate. You turned around and were met with the sight of your eldest sibling, Shamura, looking at you happily.
You immediately ran over to them and hugged them like a bear. They giggled warmly and reciprocated the hug.
“Shamura…! I missed you and everyone else so much!” You chirped.
“Yes yes…” Shamura began patting your back with one hand and petting your head with the other. “We missed you too, dear brother.”
The two of you stayed in the hug for what felt like hours. You were just so happy to be back in your body, back in your world, and back in the presence of your borderline parent again.
Eventually though, you separated. You immediately had one question for Shamura.
“…So what the fu- frick was all that?”
Shamura narrowed their eyes at your almost-swear, but went back to normal quickly.
“It was clear to me that you were growing weary in your duties, and your powers had begun to suffer as a result…so I came up with an idea to revitalize your soul. Using a spell that me and Allocer came up with, we made your soul dormant, instilled placeholder memories, and sent you to live in another world until your soul had rested enough.”
“And I’m guessing that when I’d rested enough, my soul started to wake up or something, and start dispelling the fake memories?” You finished.
Shamura nodded. “Correct.”
“Haha! Well thanks so much, Shamura! I feel better than I have in centuries! I feel like I could uproot the entirety of Darkwood and replant it in the span of a day!”
Shamura chuckled. “I’m glad, brother. …Oh! That reminds me. You were away for around 2 months in our world’s time.”
“Got it. I’d better get back to work then!”
“Yes, yes, of course, Leshy. Walk with me while I catch you up to speed, please.”
You and Shamura then began to stroll around the temple. You listened to Shamura talk, but barely took in anything they were saying. All you could really focus on was how good it was to be back.
