Recently I began volunteering at a bird sanctuary and rehabilitation center.
Last night I was out with some friends having ice cream at sonic and we all noticed a strange bird flying spratically around us. The bird even clipped me once and we saw it have a crash landing in the center payment where everyone places their food orders and right next to the drive through! Something was not right about the bird so I acted quick and dumped out my purse so I could catch him. I approached him slowly and he pointed his beak up at me and froze. I lighted put my purse on him and wrapped him up. Everyone was staring at me and my friends were cheering :) I wrapped him up in a towel and took him home so I could get him to the sanctuary in the morning (it was really late). I had no idea what kind bird he was until I pulled out my handy dandy field guide! He is a heron type bird called a Bittern! And he is a baby at that so thats why his flying didn't make an sense! I am very glad that I have already learned so much from where I work that I could so quickly and easily recover a bird like this and get him out of harms way! While before working here, I could only look on sadly and not know what to do! *So happy* I can't wait for him to be back out and healthy in the wild!

It's so nice that you could help a poor little fledgeling. Most people have never seen a bittern even if they've heard one.
I did my first rescue this month too, back on the 3rd. At least you weren't chasing a 13 lb. eagle fledgeling with a broken wing around in a thunderstorm.
