Up until the harsh winter of 1886, Dakota Asbury was a restless young cowboy earning his living during the last years of the great cattle drives. Forced to settle down, he finds himself working a small homestead in southern Colorado, trying to make peace with what his future will hold. Dakota is a mercurial sort of man, often regarded as a charming and mild-mannered fellow, but is given over to elusive bouts of self-destructive sorrowfulness and vice. Despite Dakota's immaturity, he is considered resourceful, well-read, and clever enough to survive in a rapidly changing world.
