Took my own advice and tried a sketch with an opaque brush. It forced me to make more assertive calls on colours and shapes, and even though it's pretty far off from the reference, my brain was tickled.

I love subtle hue variations like that. Really, I should be working more from live reference, since you can pick up on those subtle things way better than seeing stuff in a jpeg.
