The Reveal
A Thursday Prompt story

Prompt: mystery
A black-footed ferret in an ill-fitting trench coat adjusted his lapels and faced the assembled family of the victims. “I have finally gathered enough evidence,” he said to the wealthy clan, “to determine who, beyond any shadow of a doubt, is responsible for these grisly murders.”
The family’s butler, a tall and bulky brown bear, scowled. The ferret said, “I didn’t mean you.”
“So the butler didn’t do it?” the matriarch of the family said. She was wearing the traditional black and brought a tissue to her nose as her surviving son rested a consoling paw on her shoulder. “No offense, Charles.” The grizzly grumbled but said nothing. “Who is it, Detective?”
“In good time, Mrs. Rodgers,” the detective said. “I will begin,” he said to the family members, “with the first tragedy to befall your family, the death of your husband. Ethan Rodgers, a wealthy hedge fund manager, loved his collection of classic cars. The murderer knew this, and as Mr. Rodgers was working beneath a Mercedes 300 SL when an unknown paw slashed a hydraulic line, sending the car hurtling down to crush Mr. Rodgers.” The detective looked grim. “We may take solace in that he felt no pain. But the murderer left a clue, namely the cut end of the hydraulic line. It gave me an indication of the murderer’s height, reach and strength.”
The surviving son gulped. “So, a taller man?” he asked. The butler rolled his eyes and left the room.
“Yes. Your older sister Dorothy was the next victim,” the detective continued. “Dorothy was studying to be an electrical engineer and was electrocuted when the wire supporting the patio lights was dropped into the family swimming pool. Again, the murderer betrayed his height and reach when the line was cut.”
“Finally, we come to your brother Ethridge, a chef.” Mrs. Rodgers began to weep again, her mouth opening to sob and revealing a set of rodentine incisors. “Again demonstrating his strength, the murderer crushed his head in a duck press.” The ferret shed his trench coat and laid it aside. “Based on all of the evidence, I can reveal the identity of the murderer to you.”
The family of prairie dogs glanced at each other before giving their full attention to the detective. “Who – who is it?” the son asked.
The ferret bared his teeth. “Me.”

Nice twist!
Long ago, Vrghr's toyed about with a plot about a "premier detective" that had slipped up on a couple cases, mis-identifying the culprit and trashing his reputation in the process. So he sets out to use his skills to create a series of "unsolvable" events, while carefully planting evidence to lead each case to the worst of those who disparaged his failures. Hoping the authorities will turn to him once again and he can take his revenge by implicating those who'd wronged him.
Your story here brought those ideas back to this wuff's mind. Thanks!

Absolutely! Whoever thought to bring gray squirrels into Britain deserved to get his nose cut off.
