The Girl I Left Behind Me (Fife and Drum)
For Independence Day (July 4), which is today, I made this simple fife and drum arrangement of a song I first learned from listening to fife and drum music, "The Girl I Left Behind Me." It is said to have been played when soldiers left for war or a naval vessel set sail. According to other sources the song originated in 1758 when English Admirals Hawke and Rodney were observing the French fleet. The first printed text of the song appeared in Dublin in 1791. A popular tune with several variations, "The Girl I Left Behind Me", may have been imported into America around 1650 as "Brighton Camp", of which a copy dating from around 1796 resides in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
The Muse Sounds font didn't have one for an actual fife, though, so I had to change it to a piccolo. A concert bass drum and a military field drum (rope-tensioned snare drum) accompany the piccolo.

Your arrangement sounds really nice, well done. I like it too.
I know this tune as a folk song, here are the lyrics as I remember them. You can sing them to the same Fife and Drum tune.
I'm lonesome since I crossed the hill
And over the moorland sedgy
I'm lonesome since I crossed the hill
And parted with my Betsy
I see no more the fine and gay
For each does but remind me
How swift the hours did pass away
With the Girl I left behind me
Oh ne'er shall I forget the night
The stars shone bright above me
And gently lent their silvery light
When first she vowed she loved me
But now I'm bound for Brighton Camp
And may God favor find me
And swiftly send me back again
To the Girl I left behind me

Thank you for sharing. Often when I heard these melodies in my younger days, I had no idea what the lyrics were. The song "My Grandfather's Clock," which I've done here, falls into the same category.

I didn't do this one as a fife and drum piece, though.
