The Finest Battlefield implement ever!
Went target shooting with
kovu998 last week and he went total and utter giddy when he found out I have a M-1 Garand. Something he's dreamed about firing someday. And this trip to Madison got him to actually fire one for real.
Patton called this rifle the best battlefield implement ever made. The United States was the first to issue a semi-automatic battlefield rifle to the troops in 1936. Firing a .30-06 round, weighing in at 9.8 pounds, using a 8 round steel clip that was fed in through the top. This particular rifle is Springfield made, in March of 1945 and likely saw action in the Pacific.
Kovu was used to a M-16 and its weight and recoil, this rifle knocked him pretty good since he wasn't used to firing such a heavy round.

My Favorite Rifle gets approval by my favorite WW 2 General.
The M-1 Garand is a wonderful rifle. The weight, accuracy and feel of the weapon is beautiful. If you want some real fun with it fire it at some water filled milk jugs. Then firing into a small body of water and watch the splashing XD. Seriously, I fired one at my Uncle's place and it was a lot of fun. Especially when I sent the empty milk jug to the bottom of his lake

Confusingly, there was a rifle called the Enfield, that was chambered for .30-06, it's not the M1. That rifle is the M1917, and was originally produced under contract for the Brits, in .303, for the Great War of 14-18. It was pressed into service, as a stopgap, in the face of a shortage of 1903 Springfields, chambered for 30-06 when the US entered the war. The tooling was there, and ready, so why not? It's a very serviceable rifle.
But typically, when people talk about an "Enfield" they're likely talking about the "Short Magazine, Lee-Enfiled" or a Lee-Enflied No. 4, which were the British shoulder arm for two world wars, and in to the future for quite a long while; if I'm not very much mistaken, they were still using the No. 4 Mk. I (T) as late as the Falklands war, for sharp-shooter applications. But don't quote me on that.

such a lovely rifle. I can never own one of those in california and most other states now. (felony, even if reduced) Had an airsoft replica. was weight for weight, same action, including the clip springing out and giving that special sound. the M1 garand along with the springfield '03 and the M1 carbine were some of the best U.S. rifles for the era.
yeh but Canada was still using the .30-06 Lee Enfield until 1984 in the Reserves when they switched to colt C7 just enfield to C7 the two where like night and day... my brother was in the Reserves so he used both weapons and he told me how much of a difference the C7 made... I just think that the Lee-Enfield he was issued was shot out.. and almost useless... you can still buy Lee-Enfield's in Canada in great shape but they will only take 8 shots like the M-1 a friend did have the old 10 shot mag enfield but he told me it was almost useless too.....so I guess that you have to be careful buying a used Rifle here...
at the time I was using the Leaver action 30-30 Winchester for hunting...... it sure had a kick... loud as hell too

can't remember which Russian made machine gun has an easy load drum mag.....
I saw this lady load it on you tube... she was literally just stacking the rounds in the drum primer out and then she closed the hatch and then twisted a crank in the back of the mag and it was ready to go took her less then a minute.... well when you are in a fire fight every second counts. course only times I have been in one of those is in an MMO like BF series or other real time shooter games...

As I understand it its a gun you either love or hate. Never got to fire one and more so never had to tare one down, clean one up, load, etc so I will remain neutral until I get the chance.
Am a fan of the Mosin though. Tore a tree in half with that one though it kicks like a mule.

I sure hope for his sake he had a better grip with his supporting hand than the picture suggests, or else he's going to get a faceful of receiver when that thing jumps back at him. The closest I've ever gotten to shooting a Garand was handling an unloaded one at a weapon display held by a group of reenactors at an air show years back.
so that is the Type 56 Assault rifle he has in the Previous picture

Link 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_56_assault_rifle (trying to compare the Rifle in this Image) http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6145268/

I know the above Picture is a M-1 Garand 8 shot built in Mag.
i had a little problem with Firefox and put the Info for the type 56 assault rifle in this pictures comments window by mistake,
I did provide a link to the relevant picture.

You should have brought more ammo so
kovu998 would have left with a bruised shoulder. XD

You bet... I agree! I have 3 of them one is a DCM M1, like collector grade, one my shooter (from CMP collector grade) and a 3rd, a heinz 57 for reenacting. One of the primary reasons I reenact/living history is to bring great firearms into direct contact with the public in a non-confrontational way..
