And now we come to one of our bigger movie milestones — the 40th Anniversary of "Back to the Future", released on July 3, 1985. What else can be said about it? Except that it's one of the most iconic sci-fi comedies of all time (emphasis on the word "time"). Not only was this movie popular enough to warrant two sequels (culminating into an awesome film trilogy), but it help bring to the mainstream some interesting scientific theories about the possibilities of time travel (i.e.: the butterfly effect, altering the space/time continuum, etc). As well as Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly being one of the coolest main characters since James Dean's Jim Stark.
I love the entire trilogy from start to finish. I even had the honor of seeing "Part III" in theatres when I was almost 4 years old. When I eventually saw all three films at an older age (on home video), I was blown away. It quickly became one of my favorite film series. I even remember watching the cartoon on CBS Saturday Morning at a young age. And of course, I LOVED "Back to the Future: The Ride" when it was at Universal Studios. To this day, I still miss that ride.
The music to these films is phenomenal, from Alan Silvestri's epic orchestral score, to the pop songs by Huey Lewis and the News, which included hits like "Power of Love", and "Back in Time". ZZ Top would contribute to the "Part III" soundtrack with their song, "Doubleback".
As for me, I feel blessed to have brought the spirit of BTTF to my life, by getting to meet writer/producer Bob Gale at a screening of the film (followed by a live Q&A) back in 2015. Most recently, I got to meet Doc Brown himself Christopher Lloyd at the 2025 Planet Comicon in Kansas City (pictured above). It was such a thrill to meet him and to have him sign my Flux Capacitor replica. I even quoted Doc Brown by saying, "The future is what you make it"...and he responded with, "make it a good one". What an exciting moment that was.
My friend Kosperry (who designed my Matt Gaufur sona) is also a huge BTTF fan. And I definitely recommend his "Bark to the Future" rendition of the trilogy, which can be viewed here: barktothefuturetrilogy.blogspot.com
Happy 40th Anniversary to the greatest time travel saga of all time! See you in the future!
