Symbol bears a lot of trauma and weight to him. Every time he sleeps, he is put into someones head to give them his dream specialty, but that means he has to witness your symbolic dream too. And he's smart enough to understand the symbolism. This means when he has to give people a symbolic dream of trauma, a warning, or otherwise negative things, he has to bear witness to it first hand himself.

Basically: If he sleeps, he sees messed up things. If he stays awake, he will become tired and sick.
