I am building a new group of characters who will be crew members of the commercial starship "Phoenix". Their story will be starting soon.
Menalippe is a ferret morph, and a former slave. Now formally mated to her human companion, she does ship's services - all those odd jobs that don't get handled by machines or by the specialists. She is very quick to learn new things, and often helps the others when needed.

Hmmmm...are we talking NAW programming as a slave or possibly someone who's family was taken by one of those questionable colonies that likes to press people into service?
The fact you mention she learns quickly hints at her story might be just a little less complicated then Leanna, but more complicated then one of the common homeground slaves of NAW.

Interesting.
Leanna did say some of the worlds handled their slaves differently from her home planet.
If you take that into account, they might have an entirely different way of looking at slaves and handling them.
I remember one interesting way how two web comic writers approached this with A.I.'s and genetically engineered beings. Basically they are made as indebted beings to who they were made by or made for. But they are made with a contract and after said contract expires, their free beings.
It stands to reason that some worlds might have completely different ways to avoid what happened back on earth if they really thought about it.

It's only a small crew, so one human amongst the lot isn't too odd. In my other stories, humans like Boyce are in a strong position. Menalippe's human mate has something to prove to the others, and in a furry story, a human character has to be significant to the plot. It ain't easy!
