Let you in on something...most everyone in the show world who hasn't been involved in the breed thinks the sloping backs are nuts. -.-
Now, apparently dogs with sloped backs still pass their OFA at 2 years, I have to question if they would at age 8.
But most breeders don't retest down the line regardless of breed at this point in time. I think we may see it become common practice in the future though.

That's a theory, yes(as it would make one think there will be an absurdly amount of weight put on the hind quarters at such a level as to cause more stress to the joints). And I believed it once myself, as it stands now, I think it is just silly and risky. Like I said, these guys are passing OFA at 2. So while I mention testing again at a later age....a fair number of those dogs won't end up with bad hips, but tracking your lines by retesting would improve the chances for weeding out the ones who are more likely to throw HD.
But hip dysplasia is a very common occurrence in many of the popular breeds that don't have sloping backs, it is something that can come from genetics and comes from bad breeding. Though it can ALSO be caused by over working the joints, especially when a dog has been spayed/neutered too early.
I rather do my research and be able to go 'yeah, I don't know why or how, but-' than to bash.

There's several reasons the slope came about. And trust me, not a fan of GSDs myself, but-understanding is important.
For the working dog, a slight slope is believed to cause a dog to reach top speed faster. Why they need to go faster sooner with people being slow compared to dogs in general...I don't know! Besides, look at sighthounds. Some, like the whippet, may have a rounded back, or an odd top line like the Azawakh, but...mostly..no sloped backs there, so why fix what isn't broke?
For the show dog, it was to make the dog look like it was going pounce on the judge..basically going for intensity. That, and the flying trot that they do.
So, 3 reasons which make no sense to me. But, there's plenty of other breeds to choose from, so let the silly people have the silliness. So long as they health test to justify what they do....whatever. X3

The Belgian Malinois is an excellent, fast police dog with no sloping back, so again.. it just seems like BS to me.
I would think a GSD with a really sloping back would run like a hopping frog, if anything.

Mals are fast, quick dogs. Also...little! So there's often the joke running around of them being a police dog you can hide in your coat...or something of the sort. There was an amazing video I saw with Mals, but I can not seem to find it sadly. It involved some of the most impressive sliding/turning downs I've ever seen.
