Fun fact: No one is surprised anymore by the fact that this is actually the "larva" of a single amphibian. But did you know they're on the verge of extinction?
Axolotls are only found in two lakes in Mexico City. However, because one of the lakes was drained, there is now only one place on Earth where they can live outside of captivity.
As of 2022, it is estimated that only 700 to 1,200 axolotls remain in the wild.
