So I went into my snake/rodent room to get some stuff for the scorpion cage and heard a TON of squeaking and peeps. I went to my rat cage and BOOM! Mother rat and a ton of baby ratties. I scooped her out of the main cage and put her in the mother cage - and went ahead and put in two other pregnant females. TWENTY PLUS BABIES GRAH!
I couldn't believe it. I managed to count 20 but she was getting fussy at me and I'm sure there are more in the pile. But wow it was...insane. I get two baby scorpions today and then end up with 20 something pinks. Gah!
Well, these are safe from snakes. I'm going to let her rear up as many as she can (hopefully all). I'm wanting to keep the females...and any 'special males' will be either kept or sold as pets. She was bred to two hairless dumbo rats, so chances are I'll have a combination of normals, hairless, and hairless dumbo's. Any 'normal males' will be sold as whatever. But gyah! Such a huge litter!

Most rats unless there's somethign wrong with the babies won't kill them. And you can totally handle them without any problems though sometimes it's better to move the mother out to let her have community time with other females she cares for just to keep her from being snappy. They're not like hamsters at all when it comes to children so don't worry and the more you handle them the better, just make sure you handle them ALL instead of just one or two, that way they all smell alike. I've gone through a few ratty pregnancies myself so if you need any help/advice let me know ^_^
Thanks. I've had a couple of rat litters before, same with mice, so I'm not new to it. xD I have at least eight or more other females I have that are breeding. But I've had the stupid luck that if I handle the babies they kill the ones I handle usually. And this particular female - though I've tried handling her constantly - does NOT like being handled. She's very skiddish - and though she doesn't bite, she tries to get away.
I have her in a separate cage from the main group but she's with two other adult females who will probably give birth soon.
The two I put her with are easy to handle though. They're complete sweethearts. I just don't want to risk her killing the babies just because I handled them. Like I said, I have the stupid luck where my rodents will kill any baby I've touched. Then again..it was usually just the mice who did that..either way, I don't start handling the babies until they're fuzzy size or bigger. All these guys look healthy as can be though. I'll be in there everyday checking on them..though I think I'm gonna do some moving around again here in the next couple of days and put them in a bigger cage.

yeah mice and rats handle babies differently. Honestly rats are far more tolerant than mice even the skittish ones. But it was a good idea putting them in with the other pregnant ladies. usually they'll communally help raise the litters and even nurse for one another <3 Just make sure after about a week you start handling them if you're not comfy doing it now. The more you handle them the more the babies will be used to you handling them.
Good luck! I bet they'll all be adorable. if I lived closer I'd probably take a couple lol.

Haha, yeah. I had another rat litter a little while ago (search my gallery..pics are there) and I had kept four total out of I think 9 babies or something?
Anyways, I started handling them once they hit fuzzy/hopper stage. Then I handled them everyday after that and the babies are now super super spoiled. My boyfriend has one - it ended up being just a normal black-hooded..but that one is so spoiled and affectionate. He gives you kisses, cuddles, and loves hugs. The hairless/rex/dumbo I got out of that litter is just as spoiled. He's my buddy, and such a sweetheart. The female is as well.
The mother right here I got when she was full grown and I don't think she was handled much from her previous owners (they also breed rats so not all of them get handled). The females I got when they were young have come out as great pets. My hairless female who had my first succsful litter was such an amazing mom. Such a sweetheart...and she loves being handled. She'll sit in your hand and give you kisses and everything. ^_^
Yeah, I have some plans for these guys. I'm gonna let her keep whichever ones she doesn't kill until they get old enough to be separated.
I won't tell you what though because I don't want you to get offended. :<

If you mean using some of them as feeders, I'm not going to get offended. That's just the life cycle, and though I advocate using prekilled food due to injuries that can happen during feeding time with live rats, I'm not about to tell people what to do with their animals, so no worries there. Snakes have to eat as well after all.
Your ratty gal had a huge litter t hough! The biggest one I've seen was around seventeen or so. More than twenty, woah, supermum. She might eat a few just due to size but hopefully havign the other gals in there will help big time.
Awwww Spoiled ratties are the best. Most of the ones I have we got as rescue and they dont like to be handled, but they'll take food from my hands which is a BIG improvement over when I first got them, but Sugar and Cream we got from tinytiny babies and they're spoiled gushyrats who like climbing all over us.
Your ratties sound adooooorable *Squeak*

Hehe. They are awesome. And yeah, I usually feed my snakes pre-killed. The ones that will be dedicated as 'food' will be 'taken care of' prior to the snakes being fed. I hate being picky but I already decided how I'm going to do that. Because she's a normal, and the father was a hairless dumbo, I'm bound to get a variety of everything...hairless, hairless dumbo, dumbo, and normals. All the females are safe - I plan on keeping as many females as possible. I may only keep one or two males if they are hairless or hairless dumbos. The rest that are hairless, hairless dumbo, or dumbo, will be sold as PETS only. I'll have to charge close to pet store prices for them to make sure people don't buy them for food but...I'll do it to make sure. The 'normals' will be sold for lesser price...and it won't matter what they go for - as bad as that sounds. >_<
I really like my hairless, dumbos, and hairless dumbos..and could NEVER feed a snake them....I'm too picky for my own good. I just kinda hope there are more of the 'special ones' than of the normals....but..will see after a fe w weeks..

Aww. Well, I just checked the huge group of bebbies and they're still alive. The mother ran right back to them and the other two females stayed put and were like "We're too fat to move..."....their bellies are BULGING! I'll probably have over sixty babies in the next couple of days. O__O;
THe other rats that are pregnant are a liver-hooded (just her head has the coloration) and an albino. The father to those litters are also hairless dumbo's so I should expect another variety bunch, though more albino's with the albino one..which is fine. I might get hairless albino's or dumbo albino's xD

albinos are quite pretty! I hope they all make it through :) and if you ever have too many... can always go nomnom with snakes ... ;)
my girl ate a fuzzie today! it was the perfect size, but it's head was bent forward so she grabbed it by the neck with her head over the top of the mousehead... XD she had fun forcing that down XD once the head was in the rest was so easy to go down, sortof like when she was little and had her first fat pinks.... AAAAAAAH she's at 40 grams 8D and her food lump is actually visible again! 8D so excited but I forgot to get pics :(
I expect pics of the next two litters of rat pups :)

Of course! And congrats! All my 2010's are on rat pinks which are fuzzy size. Some are eating as many as two now! Some even more xD.
I'll have to show you pictures of the two newbie snakes whenever I get around to it. If you're ever on msn hit me up (if you're not busy) and I'll tell you what happened that left me feeling so horrible. x.x...
