The tavern was quiet as the barkeep worked quietly behind the bar, wiping down the dark wood of the bar top and polishing a few glasses. Most patrons had retired to their lodgings for the night; a few drunken stragglers still slouched in their seats. The barkeep watched curiously over two patrons in particular, unusual to their typical rabble this time of night.
The candles on their table burned low to the base as Aurora and Thorne had been working tirelessly over their maps, charts and notes for several hours. Setting up at a table in the corner just before most folks came in for their evening supper and getting to work once their meal had been completed. Thorne, as a traveling mercenary, had worked with the ranger’s guild in the past in other regions. Their expert swordsmanship as well as their sharp-witted mind was well known to the guild. So it was no surprise when their assistance was once again requested. Soon they were teamed up with the keen-eyed Aurora to work on locating and taking down a local bandit gang that had been plaguing Oakhaven and other neighboring towns.
The gang’s movements seemed to be erratic and spontaneous. With no particular sense or pattern to the methods in which they used to ransack the local populous. Tracking down their main base had proven to be difficult to even the most experienced scouts. But Thorne and aurora were determined to solve this enigma. Compiling every bit of information they could; each lead, each attack, were all transcribed onto Aurora’s personal map of the area. Piece by piece the puzzle began to come together until Thorne finally make the last connection they needed.
“Here” Thorne said with a bit of excitement in their voice as they adjusted their spectacles and pointed to a section of the map. “There must be something here. A place they are using to conceal their whereabouts.”
“You’re right!” Aurora’s tail whipping behind her in excitement as she beamed over the map, realizing where her companion was referring to. “That’s the Serpant’s Pass. It’s known to be treacherous to traverse due to how the rivers split and flow through the ravine. But there must be a hidden cave network they are using.”
I am so excited with how this one turned out! Thorne is such a magnificent character and
