The impact snapped her back to awareness for a brief moment—just enough for Alyx to grab her chin with her free hand and turn her gaze directly into her own eyes, establishing a connection.
The cat stared at her with wide eyes filled with pain and mistrust—but also understanding and gentleness.
“After everything, do you still not trust me?” she asked, her voice aching with sorrow.
She gestured behind her, motioning to the temple hall.
“When you opened the door, I realized what the symbols meant. If you trust me… they say you can breathe here. Inside the temple.”
Lea shook her head, as if trying to rid herself of the intrusive thought. She weakly tried to pull her hand free, but Alyx held on firmly. Lea’s lips had already started to turn blue, even though the substance around her was warm enough to prevent freezing.
“Please… trust me one more time. If anything happens to you—I will find you, no matter where you are. Even if it’s the afterlife, I’ll come for you. I promise I’ll bring you back.”
Even if Lea wanted to believe her deep down, overcoming instinct was almost impossible.
She tried to remember the most important moments she’d shared with Alyx—when she had trusted her unconditionally, when she’d been completely open and vulnerable with her.
That gave her the strength to act.
