This is mostly an update post,
Hellu all, seems I’ve kinda dropped off the face of the earth for sometime ^ ^;
For those who don't know I've returned to school since… ig last summer, wow that's a while ago. I can kinda rest easy since all of my requirements have been met!! It's just a matter of getting into the program, so I still have a few more years left but I’m just relieved to at least have an end goal that’s not crazy far away. Will I be free from school over the summer? Nope T^T… tbh idk if I’ll do AF this year, if I do I probably won’t draw much depending on my classes work load orz
On to the ASL stuff!!! Spring term I started learning ASL, partly because of Ponya ngl (idk why but I strongly envision her being mute, but I’d like for her to have a way of communicating) BUT I’ve always been kinda interested in it. The class was great and the teacher is an amazing communicator, I was a bit nervous since I knew nothing about signing. I still have so much to learn, but signing just feels very comfortable for some reason. My ASL vocabulary is still very limited so there's some frustration when I don't know certain signs, but it's just nice not having to talk, I hope to complete all the classes eventually!
I strongly recommend learning ASL. It's fun, it's a bit embarrassing at first but it's a wonderful experience and can be useful!! Though tbh I haven't really ran into many deaf folks in my life :’)

My family learnt a few words in ASL after a cousin adopted some deaf kids. It is very handy having a few words to communicate to people. Especially during times when you need to be quiet.
As for Ponya being mute it makes some sense that she'd have trouble speaking human speech since she is a sea creature. Though I guess if she is based on an Orca I could picture making some Orca squeaking and clicks.

Awww that’s sweet of them! My teacher had us watch a video about audisum (not autism) it shared that about 60% of deaf children born into hearing families the parents still do not learn ASL :( it really blew my mind away how high that statistic was! Its beautiful your willing to learn a little to communicate with them
For Ponya it’s more so she doesn’t have the right vocal cords or anatomy to facilitate speech. She can make sounds, just nothing legible will ever come out

That is a depressing statistic. I learnt very little though, and sadly I have forgotten most of the ASL I learnt after they moved to another state, but it's still handy to know a couple signs. I just need to brush up on it a bit more. If/when I have kids I want to teach them ASL even if they have no disabilities because it's just feels like a useful thing to know.
And fun to hear that my guess for Ponya was kinda accurate.
