I'm glad I was able to finish this and get it up just in time for Brian Wilson's 83rd birthday, which he just missed.
I thought of adding a surfboard to make it feel more in line with the classic 'Beach Boys' image, but it felt a little too precious. Anyway, Brian was never really about surfing, or girls or sun and fun. At heart, Brian was about the imagination. And the emotion - about the loneliness, the wistfulness, and longing for love, which he was always able to express so beautifully and so simply. DECEPTIVELY simply I should say, given how complex his music really is. And he never lost that. His songs still felt honest, sincere and most remarkably, hopeful, after all the suffering he went through in his life.
God bless you, Maestro. We hope your soul has finally found peace.
