Dr. Haldren, Dr. Virgil, and Father stood in front of the med-tank that contained 239-144. Dr. Virgil held canister of the improved FEV in his hands, ready to be injected into the med-tank. It had taken 5 weeks, but all the preliminary testing against her blood, tissue, and physiology had done well. In fact, her unique blood seemed to actually co-operate the FEV, somehow.
“I'm ready to inject the FEV MkIV into the tank, Father.” Virgil said in a deep voice. “Shall I proceed?”
Father nodded. “Go ahead, Dr. Virgil. Dr. Haldren? Monitor her vital signs.”
Haldren nodded. “Yes, Father.” She walked over to the bank of monitors and waited.
Virgil walked over to the tank and set the canister down. He then hooked an injection tube, that connected to the tank, to the canister. He then stood up, and looked at Father. “Beginning injection now.” He pressed a green button on the side of the tank.
He took a few steps back and watched as the yellow liquid of the FEV mixed with the green fluid of the tank.
“Her heart-rate has increased. As has her pulse.” Haldren said. “But her vitals are still stable. Er... well stable for her... species.”
A few minutes passed and nothing happened.
“Hrm.” Virgil hummed. “Perhaps I need...”
He stopped talking as 239-144 twitched and her eyes snapped open. Her back arched as she she seemed to scream under mask.
Father looked at Haldren. “Dr. Haldren? What is going on?”
“Her blood pressure is spiking and her pulse is off the charts.” Haldren answered. “She's at risk of cardiac arrest.”
“Virgil! Shut everything down!” Father shouted out of concern.
“I can't! The FEV is already in her system.” Virgil shouted back. “There's nothing I can do!”
Father watch helplessly as 239-144 thrashed in the tank as her missing arms and legs grew back and her muscles doubled in size. After a full 60 seconds, she stopped thrashing and floated motionless in the tank.
“Her... vitals are levelling.” Haldren announced. “They're returning to normal.”
Father walked up to the tank and placed his right hand on the glass. 239-144 eyes opened and looked at Father. She placed her left on glass where his hand was. Father smiled warmly at her.
Her left hand suddenly formed into a fist. She drew it back and then slammed it into the glass, causing it to crack in a spiderweb shape.
Father took a few steps back. “Um...”
Virgil gasped as well. “That glass is ballistic plastic and... three inches thick. I don't think she will be able to...”
239-144 drew her right hand back and slammed it into the same spot, causing the glass to crack more, and the fluid started to leak out.
“Security team to BioScience.” Father called into his chest communicator. “Now.”
239-144 looked at Father. She drew her fist back again, and shattered the glass completely, causing the liquid to gush out. She stood up and ripped off her breathing mask. Her fur, which was once brown and beige, was now a solid black. Her hair, however was still a deep copper colour.
“Calm yourself.” Father said, holding his hands up, palms towards her, in a non-threatening manner. “You're not in danger. You're safe.”
239-144 growled and flexed her forearms. A razor sharp, single six inch bone... claw came out from both her hands.
Father gasped. “What-”
“An unexpected result...” Virgil said.
Three Gen 2 synths, armed with laser rifles, entered the room.
Father turned and faced them. “No. Don't fire.”
239-144 let out a feral growl and jumped over Father, and landed on the first Synth's chest, 10 feet away, knocking it to the floor. She sunk her claws into its neck and cut its head off. In a blink of eye, she cut the heads of the other two synths.
She stood among the destroyed synths, oil covering the walls with oil, not even breathing hard. Her eyes snapped to Father.
Father swallowed hard. “Father. I am Father.” He placed his hand on his chest. “You're safe. Safe.”
239-144 tilted her head. “F-Father?”
Father nodded. “Yes. Father. Do you have a name?”
239-144 blinked. “Name?”
“Do you know your name?” Father asked as he took a step forward.
She blinked rapidly but didn't say anything.
“We need to give you a name.” He looked at her eyes. They were glowing gold with an inner light. “Amber. Would you like to be called Amber?”
239-144 slowly, slightly, smiled. “Father calls her Amber.” Her claws retracted back into her forearms. “Is... Amber Father's daughter?”
Father smiled warmly as he nodded. “Yes. Amber. You can be my daughter.”
Amber walked over to Father, the top of her head coming up to his chin. She then hugged him tightly. “Father.”
Father hugged her around her shoulders. “Dr. Haldren? Do you know why she's talking so basically?”
“Hard to say, F-” She stopped herself, not wanting to confuse Amber. “Uh, Director. It could be from the traumatic experience from her injuries. Or the FEV. We'' need to perform more tests.”
Amber stepped back from Father and looked at Haldren. “Amber... injured?”
Dr. Haldren nodded. “Uh. You were. Yes. But I helped fix you.” She gestured to Dr. Virgil. “So did Virgil.”
Amber tilted her head and smiled. “Thank you for fixing Amber.”
Haldren smiled. “You are welcome.”
Father took off his lab coat and placed it over Amber's shoulders. “I will take her to her quaters. Get her some clothing and then some food.” He looked at the destroyed synths. “She managed to disable them faster then our Coursers.”
Virgil nodded. “Most impressive. Perhaps, after some time, do you think she could help us with other synths? The missing synths?”
Amber looked up at Father. “Father helped Amber. She... wants to help Father.”
Father smiled. “Yes. Of course. But not now. Amber will need to train. First, we will get you food and a nice warm bed.”
Amber smiled in return. “O...okay.”
Father took her left hand in his right hand, and headed out of the BioScience wing with her. As He lead her into the main lobby, she stopped walking and up looked at the high ceiling, that simulated the sky.
“This is Amber's home?” She asked in awe.
“Yes. This is Amber's home.” Father said as he looked warmly at her as he watched her look around the Institute. “You are welcome to go where you please.”
Amber looked at Father. “Amber feels safe with Father. May Father... show Amber around?”
“Of course, my Daughter.” He nodded. “Come along, Dear. Let me take you to your room.”
They walked to a spiral staircase, and headed up three floors. They came to a door, which slide open for them. They walked into a pristine white room, which contained a desk, a glass enclosed shower, and a double bed.
“This is where you will live, Amber.” Father said as he let her hand go.
Amber looked around and then walked up to the shower. “Is this another tank for Amber?”
“No, Daughter.” Father chuckled. “It is a shower.” He slid the door to the left. He then turned the nob on the wall, turning on the water. “See? It will clean you.”
Amber walked over to the shower and put her hand under the water. “It cleans Amber.”
Father noticed that the water was steaming. He looked at the temperature read out. It read 106F. “Amber? Do you feel the water? Is it hot?”
“Hot?” Amber asked as she kept her hand under the water.
Father grabbed her arm and removed it from the hot water. He checked her hand, which wasn't showing any sign of being burnt. “Remarkable. Does your hand hurt?”
Amber shook her head. “Amber is not hurt.”
The water automatically shut off as Father nodded. “I see. Well. Why don't we get you some food? You must be hungry.”
Amber tilted her head. “What is... hungry?”
“Hmm.” Father smiled. “It is best to show you. But first...” He walked over to the desk, and took out a white jump suit. “This is clothing. Put this on.”
Amber took the suit and put it on, with Father's help. She smiled at him. “Amber is now ready?”
“Yes, My Daughter.” Father smiled. “Let's get you some food now.”
He took her left hand in his right again, and lead her out of the room.
