This moth, however, she wanted to shine brighter than any other. While many took refuge in beautiful displays of lanterns and chandeliers, and some went higher to lighthouses and beacons that pierce the sky, she wanted to go above them all; she wanted to see the stars. It’s normal for any young child to want to go to space, but she was serious and never let go of her dreams, even if her wings could not reach the sky. Still, she carried on, pursuing fashion that was influenced by the very atoms of the universe, and then studying and researching her dreams.
The day had finally come: she had been recruited aboard a new vessel, a day she remembers fondly. There were eight when they left; only she remained. She hardly remembers what happened; did her lust for knowledge get her here? How long had passed? Or was time an illusion? Her space suit was scorched and torn; her new, voluptuous, silver body instead draped in a dress inspired by her own handiwork, shimmering in the solar light that felt almost within reach.
Perhaps a week had passed, maybe months; she couldn’t tell. Her body sat lifeless yet alive with insatiable lust and desire for comfort, for touch, for life. No name could call back to her mind, but this body, this hungering power, it wasn’t right; it wasn’t her. After everything she had accomplished, reaching the ranks, showing her craft, and achieving her dreams, what was left for her? She felt something she’d never felt before: lost. Lost and afraid, not for what lies beyond but of what she had become.
Finally, her last drop of hope poured into tears, a slight shiver on her warm cheeks. Why did the stars seem so close yet so far away? Still, she reached out her palm towards the nearest gleaming orb, her final cry for help. From birth, she knew the stars would grant her guidance, but would they listen to the ushered cries of a beast of greed? No, because they had no more guidance to give, just one final act. Upon her fingers, she watched little strings dance around, tugging her like a puppet.
Heave and tug, her little strings went, calling her to her feet. Without much struggle, she adjusted to her larger size and trod forward, from out of the debris and into the light, her body barely squeezing into the doorframe. The galactic shiver was overpowered by a warmth in her chest, the silence replaced by sparkles and glimmers and the gentle roaring of a fireplace. She’d only come to realise she was alive, breathing and swaying despite it all. Those strings, those threads of the cosmos, spread all around her. She wasn’t the puppet; she was the puppeteer.
And then, she let go.
Her once fragile wings, maintained and cared for as long as she lived, that couldn’t reach the sky, now blossomed, larger, stronger, and gleaming with incandescent beauty. She didn’t just fly; she swam in the invisible waters of this infinite realm, with nothing to drag her down. Planets once deemed inhabitable, she frolicked and danced upon, no matter the weather. She was not doomed to a pseudo-prophecy of the cosmos; she danced with the prophecy, her fingers twirling and spinning the living masses.
This feeling of being lost spiralled in her head; she was lost in a dream.
But she came back to her senses and was right back to where she was, hovering just beside a sun. Those hazy memories, the ones of her grasping models of stars in her palms as a child and watching them go by on summer evenings as a teenager, this was it. Her hands dug into the raging inferno, its plasma body spiralling with draconic plumes of marigold, and let out a sigh, one of relief. The magma ball felt like a warm bath to her, the in-betweens of her digits filled with grit and treasure. The luminary’s flares seemed to calm, and the moth’s chest filled with an oozing and bubbling sensation that made her smile.
She wasn’t lost; this was home, and she was among them, her new family. Not a monster, but reborn again as a child of the stars. Now, as they age, she will take care of them and all of the galaxy’s splendours, prosperity lying right in her hands and life drawn to her fingers. With this power, she’ll piece not only the puzzle of the universe but also the missing fragments that brought her here, as…
