Yeah, I see the merfolks as territorial. So in my head, Monroe is used to fight to protect his territory against other merfolks and monsters. Especially since he has a friend / lover on land :3
But it's probably difficult for him, outside of the weight he has that makes him extremely slow on land, he can't breath long outside of water. So he must be effective when he attacks out of the water.
