Here is a tool I have made after feeling a little inspired after watching a youtube video of a wood worker trying to make a big deal out of these things for content. He forged one of his own and the way I saw him making it just didn't seem right, so I made my own.
It is called a "Bench dog"
Here is the video he made about them. https://youtu.be/tsTZopljNmI
The way I made mine compared to his allowed it to not be so flat, the while thing has square cross section.
This was forged from plate steel that was 3/8ths of an inch thick and was 1 1/8" wide.
The way the tool is used is by hammering the small chisel into the end of a piece of wood while it's held up against a planing stop and then the two teeth are then hammered down into the workbench.
It's supposed to fasten the workpeice quite securely even allowing the woodworker to plane a piece of wood across the grain instead of straight down the length of the piece of wood.
