Aurora’s face was a familiar one to Darla, one of the rangers at Wilderrun State Park. The park, with its scenic views and sprawling trails throughout was one of Aurora’s favorites to frequent when she wanted both a challenge and familiarity in a hike. As a seasoned hiker, she was always prepared with her backpack of supplies, and Darla knew the snep was not one she typically needed to worry about out on her patrols through the park. The pair would frequently share pleasantries whenever they ran into each other, Darla briefly mentioning in passing that she would love to have a hiking buddy.
The statement quickly set an idea in motion. A few days later Aurora arrived at the park offices with her usual backpack in tow, but a blanket, a thermos and a picnic basket strapped to it. Finding the border collie, she gave a warm smile as she knocked on the office door.
“Hey would you like to join me for a hike? I have snacks from the café?”
It only took a few minutes for Darla to grab her things, and soon the pair were out hitting the trails. Each of them picked their favorite trail to share with the other along with the lovely conversation. Aurora taking them up a mountain trail that led to a beautiful scenic lookout before heading back down. Darla taking them on her favorite hidden trail that soon let out into a small clearing surrounded by fruit trees. An old orchard abandoned many years ago and left to be reclaimed by the park.
Setting up the blanket, the pair settled in for a picnic which now included several of the wild fruits to go with the sweets and still warm tea the snep brought. The two chatted until the sun started to fall and they knew they would need to leave soon, or risk hiking the trails in the dark.
“This was fun, we should do this again” Darla said looking down at Aurora who was lounging and using her leg as a headrest.
She looked up and gave a small purr as she spoke “of course, anytime”
