It might be fair to say that, despite some initial animosity between them, neither of them ever really wanted to kill the other (even if Keris might have said so). Once it got to the point that they reached an understanding and formed a friendship based on shared interests, they got to be as close as sisters. It was something Keris never knew she wanted so badly, and something Syrra never felt with her other siblings.

A good, lasting friendship will try to bring the best out of everyone involved.
