Beep missed the Egg Festival last year because he was climbing a volcano while heavily gravid with egg. This year, when he arrived, Lewis told him that he wouldn't be allowed to participate. Something about a vote and the rules being followed as written versus the spirit of the thing. Several townsfolk were upset for Beep.
Shortly before the Egg Hunt was due to begin, Sam came over to Beep and mentioned something about how, while Beep couldn't join the Egg Hunt as a single participant, there hadn't been anything saying he couldn't help other participants. Even Beep's difficulty with understanding hidden meanings and facial expressions caught the subtle nodding towards the two children of the town.
Alas, even with Beep running around and helping Vincent and Jas, they were no match for someone who was in college and practised sword fighting at night.

Things different from canon; (AU???)
Gramps never had an heir, or they never show/ed up.
Stardew Valley Expanded; new maps, new NPCs, new events, a LOT of new stuff.
The new “Farmer” is just a Weird Ass Deer. NPCs will respond/react accordingly.
This is my first time playing Stardew Valley Expanded. Please no spoilers if you play SVE.

Not so fun fact;
If the Farmer doesn’t win, Abigail automatically does. The final year I played, I intentionally blocked Abigail from getting a single egg to see if either of the actual kids would win, but because I didn’t collect above [threshold number], she won anyway despite neither of us picking up eggs.
Also sure I could’ve googled what would’ve happened, but where’s the fun in that.
