At the turn of the century, the spiked helmets and hats worn by the gentry had become as much a fashion statement as they were a protective measure against roaming dragons. Upper-class women especially began to adopt more eccentric hairstyles that had the additional function of signaling their social class to others. The beehive hairstyle embedded with large hairpins became the signature of ladies who had ample time and wealth to wear these impractically large hairstyles.
