Beautiful looking purple flowers. This plant is native to Europe and can be found growing wild in forests. I saw this one growing near the edge of a forest in southwestern Germany.
The species name Aquilegia and also the German name Akelei may have originated in the Latin term "aquam legere" which means "to collect water", referring to the large amount of nectar produced inside the flower spurs.
In English it's also known as the Common Columbine, from the Latin word "columba", meaning dove. The name refers to the curious shape of the flowers which resembles a pair of flying doves. The flowers were prominently featured in medieval religious artworks for the same reason.
