From the moment she came into the world, Melissa spent all her free time in nature, reveling in its beauty and the world around her. She found wonder in the most ordinary things: the shouts of children playing on a hot summer day, the unique colors of the sky before sunset, the fresh scent of asphalt after rain—all of it filled her with genuine delight. She spent almost her entire childhood in a small village, lost in the woods, with her grandmother.
The curious girl constantly brought home all sorts of "junk," as her grandmother called it. Her pockets were always stuffed with walnut shells whose texture seemed unique to her, wet moss with slime of unknown origin, and sometimes even a well-preserved mouse skull.
