I start with thick cardstock so it doesn't bleed too badly. Then I do a quick color-in with the intended marker color, then I pick either a lighter color to go over it again to blend (like on the chest I used "cinnamon toast" marker to blend and on the muzzle I used a 70% grey to blend), or a darker color (like I did on the dark brown parts, since I didn't have a dark umber marker) to touch up places that didn't get dark enough. The markers end up saturating the cardstock really well so they blend smoothly.
Then I took a white Prismacolor colored pencil and did highlights, and the color of the marker (like brown or dark grey or green) to do the shadowing on the fur/bandanna. On the shiniest parts I used an opaque white gel-pen, like on the nose and tongue.
