Scarlett --> boots (inanimate TF)
Another commission done! This time, it was for my good friend Micabeta, who wanted a picture of his robotic character Scarlett turning into a pair of thigh-high boots. After thinking a bit about what to do with the prompt, I got the idea that I could base the transformation off of a little wordplay, with "boot" also meaning 'to start up a computer'. From there, the concept came to me pretty easily: Scarlett would be receiving a sudden wireless signal containing one of those unavoidable mandatory system updates that requires a full system reboot... but of course, the update itself has some bugs that require later patching (something that has happened to me personally with my computers waaay too many times over the years -_- ). In Scarlett's case, since she's composed of nanites, the bug causes her entire form to change.
I had a blast working on this piece. I love the techno aesthetic, even though, with my main core cast relying on traditional magic rather than focusing on scientific TFs, I really don't get the opportunity to use it too frequently. So putting together the background here was a real treat for me, because I got to exercise some stylistic choices I wouldn't normally get to use. Scarlett's in-between form here was a challenge-- because she's made of nanites, I had decided I basically wanted the feel of her transformation to be a conversion from one solid form to another, with a liquid "gray goo" phase as the transition. That meant doing some unconventional things with my flat colors, like having multiple layers, with most of them transparent and strategically masked to get a color mixing effect. In the end, I'm quite happy with the effect-- it really looks like she's liquefying and resolidifying into a different form.
