In CoC the dice trying to kill you are probably infinite fractals from the corners of time that, once rolled, assert their numerical value upon all aspects of reality, from the number of eyes one has, to the number of eyes one is ASSUMED to have always had.

its more detailed than that, you can get strange phobias too, like you see an ozoo monster and you fail your sane roll so hard you get a phobia of chems that just so happen to be able to defeat the monster

It's more like 1-98 survive 99-100 go insane.

I love Call of Cthulhu as its one of the few games I've played where WINNING can easily result in the players all going irreparably mad. Had a game where the twist was the cult was actually doing something good, restoring life to a blighted land and when we helped prevent there ritual from being interrupted, the explosion of new life and witnessing the unbound, unstoppable power of raw nature drove our poor Victorian era dilettantes hopelessly insane.

By contrast, in another game, the investigators managed to defeat a thing infesting a lake by getting the locals to drain the water and shoot the unspeakable thing as it lay dying and helpless, but even then, witnessing something so unspeakably abominable meant that it traumatized everyone involved to the point where they all ended up wishing they'd just left well enough alone and left when they had the chance rather then sticking around to finish the job.

Have any of y'all seen the horror movie "Glorious?" The "Elder" God in it is actually a pretty dang nice guy, but he still spreads death and madness all around. It's just his nature, no matter how much he's come to love terrestrial life. Also, he's stuck in the can so his options are limited. GREAT movie, I love anything that subverts a "Defined Evil At Birth" critter into a decent person you can actually talk to.

Hehehe... this reminds me of my first and only time getting to play CoC.

We were exploring a cave looking for a couple of missing persons. There's a corpse with it's death grip around the lever of a grenade... We try to sneak around it, but my character kicks the corpse by accident due to a shit roll; the corpse *drops the grenade*... but due to a luck roll, it didn't go off because it was actually just the hand that fell off the corpse.

Made everyone's butt pucker a little with that one. lmfao

It's a fab time to start again! Some good new material out now. I cannot recommend the new "Arkham" book enough. If you've got any interest in the town as a setting, it's probably the best rpg supplement I've ever read.

Oh it ALWAYS ends in death for decaying meat-sacks like investigators. It's just the QUICK deaths that are the nice outcomes.

I love C.O.C. It's probably my favourite RPG.

MY voice game group refused to play in anything remotely like it when I was running a horror game... and... well, haven't gamed in a while now.

They need to get up on CoC's level. Ain't no experience in the world like unloading a full chicago type-writer into a monster and being told "It seems unaffected".

They're pretty much allergic to losing in any way. Like, well, when "We might as well be playing Paranoia" is meant to be a derogatory dis, you get the idea.

POV: You and the party were a little too silly and now the DM pulling the cursed die from it's cage.

As someone who is currently running a short adventure with their first-ever fully original scenario, I can only agree!

VERY classic, considering I very nearly got my players to kill eachother in their first game, 'the haunting'!

Used to play this in college a fair amount with an excellent, though merciless DM. So much fun!
Usually went like this:
1) Okay, I can solve this mystery. Library ho!
2) Well that didn't lead anywhere. Hmmm, I wonder what's going on here.
3) More townspeople died last night? Ugh, what is doing this?
4) I'm running out of ideas here.
5) Fine, I'll spend the night at the abandoned house a few miles outside of town.. just to see what happens.
6) DM, that night:
"Ummmm, you'd better do a listen check. ... you rolled a 1 on your listen check?? *sighs* Okay, you didn't hear anything."
7) I'll just create a new character now.

Heh heh heh. The trip to the library for research, though requisite, will never save you B> It'll only give you insight into what's eating you.

You can go to the library as much as you want, but you have to ask the right questions!!
