Character reference for my character Gaile. Art is done by https://x.com/kerplewy / https://bsky.app/profile/kerplewy.bsky.social
Name: Gaile Finster
Gender: Female
Age: 21
Animal: Fennec fox
Wrestling attribute: Face
Likes: Emily, praise, combat sports, research, winning
Dislikes: Cheating, plans going awry, losing, her height(subconsciously)
Strengths: Great tenacity, hard to hit, knowledgeable
Weaknesses: Gets flustered easily, vulnerable core, low strength,
Fighting style: She always develops a gameplan before fights which she abides by down to the most minute of details as each plan is specifically centered around the opponent. Said plans are limited by her knowledge of the opponent and if it goes awry it usually gets her flustered and second-guessing herself.
Focuses mainly on hit&run techniques, delivering swift but precise strikes whenever she can to gradually wear down her opponents before going for a takedown. Centers first and foremost around kicks to the shin or thighs to slow opponents down, countering with grapples using their own weight against them, and toe kicks to the inner thigh or liver. Doesn’t deal much damage but will leave the opponent hurting a lot towards the end as damage racks up, to which she’d then go for limb locks or knee strikes to finish it.
Personality: She’s a very sweet and optimistic fennec with a lot of energy to spare. She’s passionate about combat sports and subscribes to a lot of magazines even though she can’t afford much otherwise, viewing them as her own little “miniature bibles” of sorts. Is overall very welcoming towards others and always gives a chance to new people in her life, eager to make new friends both in and out of the combat community. During battle she’s more fierce and competitive, but never to the point of actively insulting or mocking her opponent unless they’re the ones starting it. Doesn’t like losing, but she accepts it with grace to show sportsmanship. If mocked for her short size, she’d just smile and play along since she’s no longer bothered by it, but deep down in her subconsciousness it does hurt… She just doesn’t realize it.
Backstory: The Finster family, and especially her parents, has been deeply ingrained in combat sports since she was born. Her father’s a manager for a couple high-profile fighters and her mother’s a journalist for an esteemed magazine, so Gaile was introduced at an early age. Unlike her parents and other family members who stood on the sidelines however, the little fennec wanted to be in the ring herself and experience the thrill of fighting first-hand. Though her parents didn’t outright disapprove of Gaile’s wishes, they made it clear that it would be a dangerous affair for someone her size and that it would be easy to receive career-ending injuries…but she was undeterred. She was relentlessly mocked at school for her short stature and this only intensified even further once word got out that she wanted to do combat sports. It brought her a lot of grief at the time growing up, but she never truly gave up on that dream of standing in the holy ring.
During high school, Gaile met her first true roadblock when she joined the school’s boxing and wrestling club. She had no talent for the craft. She was short, light, lacked any meaningful power and this had a horrible track record. Bullying intensified and even some of her teachers were beginning to say it was all just some distant dream far away from her short reach. Upon seeing how distraight their daughter had become, her parents used their connections to get their hands on three front-row tickets to a big event hosted by Diamond League, one of the world’s most elite combat sports organizations. One of the opening matches featured Meliane “Eye of the Storm” Conway, a pro fighter famous for her impeccable performance despite her short stature. However, what was intended to inspire their daughter soon took a drastic turn when on the eve of Gaile’s 15th birthday, Meliane was knocked out cold within the first few seconds of the match! Her opponent, a fresh-faced cheetah by the name of Emily Chase, finished the fight in a single blinding kick which would be aptly dubbed Killing Start days later. Gaile’s parents were shocked at the unexpected loss and turned to their daughter in worry, only to witness a gleam in her eyes they had never seen before.
Gaile had just witnessed the advent of a new star! The almost otherworldly confidence put on display was inspiring and the tiny fox became an Emily superfan overnight, dedicated to one day creating such a powerful moment of her own! With renewed dedication to reach the big leagues, Gaile put even more effort into her own training and disregarded her classmates’ constant mockery, locking every insult deep into the back of her mind. After a couple years of intense training, Gaile became part of a small organization where she’s been building experience, though she had yet again come face to face with the fact she had no talent. Fighters who came after her advanced faster than she did and the fennec’s winrate stayed almost stuck in the 40%-range, but she refused to let this deter her from her passion. One day she would break through her own limits and show the world that even someone like her could make it big if they tried hard enough. She wanted to leave her mark.
And if she had to play the long game to achieve that, then so be it!
