Matabi does have access to a limited amount of what most people consider, "Magic." He's only able to activate the magic in the pattern that runs across his torso, which causes it to lift off his body and float roughly an inch from his fur, moving about like ink in water as he moves. Its power is simple. It gives Matabi one of two powerful buffs, one increases his speed, or the other increases his strength.

This pattern across his torso is a result of the curse placed upon him a long, long time ago. The way it functions, while a tad bit morbid, is also very simple. The curse of immortality stopped Matabi from ageing, while still allowing him to die by any normal or abnormal means. However, whenever he dies, 6 hours later, the torso pattern vanishes from the corpse, and the curse rematerializes him in a safe place nearby, starting by first causing the torso pattern to appear in that space. Effective yet brutal curse.

The magic activated within the torso pattern giving Matabi strength or speed, is entirely based on how many times he's died. The strength from every corpse that the torso pattern leaves is stolen and stored within the curse, granting it all to Matabi whenever he activates the magic within the torso pattern. The speed granted to Matabi works in much the same way, though it's a lot less often that Matabi activates the magic for the speed.

The most often activation is the strength magic buff, as he uses it to lift up his wife, Lotus, who is more often than not, larger than Matabi.
