A Pleasant Danger
Tylo had set his alarm to go off first thing in the morning. He and his friend Ghostfox had made plans to go explore the local area in search of a place the two could find some nice, deep mud.
After taking a shower and readying himself for a long and adventurous day, Tylo slipped into a white bathing suit wrapped in a tribal design. He threw his black shirt over his shoulder. Tylo grabbed a granola bar from his cupboard, snatched his keys off of the hook near the door and walked out the door of his little apartment. As he hustled down the single flight of stairs of the building, Tylo unlocked his Mazda MX-5 parked in space 127 and hopped in. The leather seats were beginning to warm up as the sun peeked through the usual overcast weather in the mornings. As stated by the local weather channel, “Today’s forecast is sunny with temperatures averaging out to roughly 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Looks like it’s gonna be a beautiful Utah day!” What perfect weather to put the top down. Tylo put the key into the ignition and lowered the roof of the car. He shifted all the way to the right and down to reverse. The engine revved a little, then began to move. Tylo applied the brakes gently and the car came to a halt, but suddenly turned off.
“Can’t get used to this stupid clutch.” Tylo had recently bought this car; the first manual transmission he had ever driven! Once more, he started the car. The engine, anxious to move, revved some more. Tylo shifted into first and gently release the clutch while at the same time applied pressure to the gas peddle. The car got louder and rolled backwards a few inches before it’s engine grew quieter an deeper and the car quickly accelerated forward.
During the twenty minute drive to Ghostfox’s house, Tylo noticed a small dirt trail in a field on the side of the road that led into a small shroud of bushes and trees, not quite large enough to be a forest.
“I think there’s some water out there,” Tylo spoke to himself. As he focused his attention back onto the road, he pressed on the brakes harder than what was good for them in order to make the turn onto Ghostfox’s street. He rolled up in front of the house and honked his horn. Almost instantly, Ghostfox came outside and locked the door to his house. He was wearing his favorite green ‘20s style bathing suit, his cap and goggles in hand.
“Hey Tylo!” Ghostfox greeted.
“What’s up? You ready for today?”
“Am I ever!? I was counting the days!”
“Me too! Today’s gonna be great!”
At that, Tylo cranked up the volume to Creed and began to drive off, only to stall again. Slapping the steering wheel with his palm, he started the engine and drove away from the house.
“So, where should we look first?” Ghostfox asked with curiosity. The excitement could be heard in his voice.
“Actually, I saw a place on my way up that I wanna check out.”
“Hm? Alright, let’s do it!”
Tylo drove down the familiar street and noticed the dirt path again, now on the other side of the road. He looked ahead, then behind, and ahead again. Tylo couldn’t spot any cars and quickly swerved across the road an onto the dirt path. The tires slipped and the Mazda went into an oversteer, sliding across the dirt. The loyal driver turned the opposite way to correct his steering. He slammed on the brakes causing the tires to slip one more time and the car came to a stop in front of the largest tree in the foliage.
“Why the hell do I still drive with you?” Ghostfox complained as he stepped out of the car.
“Hey! It adds to the adventure!”
“Yeah, and my blood pressure…”
“Eh, you’ll get over it. Now come on.”
Tylo locked his car and walked quickly to catch up with Ghostfox who was too excited to wait. Once he ended up next to Ghostfox, Tylo stood on his toes to see over more bushes and shrubs. There was a large pond amongst all the greenery that lined it except for one rather large patch of red clay soil. Both of the friends' hearts began to beat rapidly, knowing that they might have stumbled upon something good. The duo ran over the brim of the soil. The surface was smooth and flawless. Ghostfox looked at Tylo and nodded. He took one step onto the soil and nothing more happened than some mud gushing between his toes. He looked back at Tylo with disappointment.
“You took one step… Keep going!” Tylo wanted to see exactly what would happen to his pal before he got in himself. Ghostfox took another step, now completely off of solid ground and the mud gave in, hugging Ghostfox’s calves, slowly pulling at his feet. Tylo smiled and immediately ran up next to his friend and stood on top of the mud as it too slowly gave in to Tylo’s weight.
Ghostfox looked up from the mud at Tylo. “This stuff feels great!”
“Yeah. Heh heh.” Tylo tried pulling his leg and noticed that the mud was gripping onto him with all of its might. A striking fear began to overwhelm him. Ghostfox was still enjoying himself, despite Tylo’s sudden lack of participation. Tylo’s struggles had caused the mud to lap at his knees before he touched the bottom.
“Heh… Hehehe! Hey! I’ve touched the bottom! You’re right! This stuff does feel amazing! Heh!”
Ghostfox raised his eyebrow. “You feelin' okay?” Ignoring this comment, Tylo bent down to touch the soft mud with his hands. “Well, I’m gonna try and go deeper. Maybe out towards the center…”
Tylo sighed. “Oh. Okay…” Ghostfox lifted his foot out of the mud and placed it forward as the mud bogged it down. Tylo too began pulling his own legs out to slowly inch his way over to Ghostfox. Ghostfox didn’t weigh as much as Tylo did and therefore had not sank any deeper at first. Tylo on the other hand was noticeably deeper in the mud and was sinking fast. The mud tugged against every movement he made.
“Um… This stuff seems pretty tough. What if we can’t get out? Was this a good idea?” Tylo began to panic.
“Oh relax. You’re fine. Just enjoy the feeling of it all on your fur.” Tylo wasn’t too sure about the mud sticking to his fur. This made him significantly heavier and added extra tension on his muscles. The mud grasped at his thighs as he looked over at Ghostfox who was also beginning to sink deeper into the muck.
“This stuff is kinda hard to get out of, isn’t it?” Ghostfox was now aware of how Tylo felt, as he was feeling it as well. As instinct kicked in, the two began to struggle to free their legs but were only pulled in deeper. Now up to their waists, they both were panicking and struggling to free themselves from the monstrous grip of the mud. The surface was liquifying around their bodies and the thick mud showed no sign of letting go of the two friends.
“Why did we do this?! I’m so stupid!” Tylo was in a rage. He knew that he had brought them here and they were now stuck waist deep in soft, thick mud, unsure if they were gonna make it out or not, if they would see the light of another day ever again.
The duo fought and fought against the grasping mud until they were chest deep.
“We’re never getting out. We’re never getting out!” Tylo continued to struggle.
“Let’s just relax… Look on the bright side: this mud really does feel great on your body. It’s warm, smooth and thick.” Ghostfox tried to keep their hopes up. Tylo would not have it and began to struggle violently again as his arms went under the surface and the mud hugged his shoulders.
“It’s too much for me! I’m screwed!”
Ghostfox knew it wouldn’t be long before he would be dragged under by the devastating grip and pull of the substance. As the mud slowly wrapped around Tylo’s neck, he lifted his head up and looked at the sky to prevent mud from making it’s way through his tightly shut lips and into his mouth. The sun was intense and blinding, and Tylo couldn’t keep his eyes open. The only sense that would tell Tylo just how deep he was as the mud swallowed him was his sense of touch; and the mud felt higher every second. The mud teased the two as it slowly enveloped them up to their muzzles. With their eyes completely under, they had nothing to do but wait until that one moment when they couldn’t breathe and their lungs would burn and die.
Tylo was the first to submerge. His nose was no longer just above the surface. Time slowed and Ghostfox’s words about how the mud felt echoed in his mind. His heart began to beat slower, softer, and the mud no longer felt as threatening, but welcoming. The mud, nice and warm against his body, the soft sediments massaged him as he moved. However, his lungs began to beg for fresh air. Tylo let out a large exhale that escaped as bubbles at the surface, and with one mighty push, he managed to use what little leverage was in the mud to help him surface. As his head peaked through the surface, it fell backwards into the mud involuntarily. It was heavy as mud stuck to his fur all over. Afraid to move his arms, he shook his head quickly to his left, then his right to try and fling mud off of his face. Once he could open his eyes, he glared over to where Ghostfox would be, but only bubbles remained at the surface. Without much time to act, Tylo knew he had to save his friend, and he began to push up on the mud as much as his tired muscles would allow him to. Slowly swimming through thick mud over to his friend was hard, but he would stop at nothing to help a friend in danger. Tylo’s muscles finally gave in and he could not swim any further. Luckily, he was only a couple of feet away from the rising bubbles. As he began to sink under once again, he reached out as far as he could under the mud to see if he could feel Ghostfox. His fingers touched something furry, and then touched a material that seemed to have a hole in it. It was the strap on Ghostfox’s swim suit! He latched on and was dragged under the mud for another round.
A hand reached out and grabbed Tylo and pulled him up towards the surface. He could feel something rubbing his face, specifically over his eyes. As they slowly opened, Tylo was relieved to see his friend above the surface and seemingly fine.
“Ghost… Ghostfox… I though I’d lost you…”
“Hang in there bud! I’ll get you out!”
“It’s too heavy. I’m tired, and sore. Just make your way to solid ground. I’ll get out somehow.”
Ghostfox wasn’t about to leave his good friend to die, so he grabbed onto Tylo as tight as he could and began kicking his legs to propel himself through the muck. Tylo flailed his legs in hopes of speeding up the process.
In no time at all, but what had seemed like forever, Ghostfox and Tylo’s team efforts had gotten them back to the edge of the pit. Ghostfox climbed out of the mud and pulled Tylo as far as he could to the ground, but he was also tired and collapsed to the floor, lying there caked in thick muck and his heart racing with adrenaline. Tylo was too tired to climb out of the mud himself, so he instead rested his head in his arms as he slouched over the edge of the mud, both feet on the bottom of the brim, still waist deep in the pit.
Tylo began to laugh. “You did it… You actually got us out of there…” Ghostfox gave a weak thumbs up and his arm flopped back to the floor. The two friends had escaped what was certain doom and couldn’t be happier to finally be back on solid earth.

Nice job on the story Tylo, I enjoyed it! You've improved a good bit on your story telling too, you give a few more details about the setting now. However, if I were to offer some constructive criticism you could do a little more description of the characters as the come into the story too. For instance, when you started you could have mentioned a few brief things about your sona like species, fur color, eye color, etc and maybe what you were wearing or something. Even though someone might already know what another person's fursona looks like, its always good to give a brief description to get someone's imagination going!
Hope to see more work from you soon too, keep it up! :D
