Arrangement: Pinky and the Brain (Theme)
Written for my traditional trio of alto saxophone, vibraphone, and piano, this is my simplified take on the theme song from a very popular animated series from the 1990s, "Pinky and the Brain." It began as a recurring sketch on the equally popular animated series "Animaniacs," and was spun-off into its own show for 65 episodes. It was later spun-off into the notorious "Pinky, Elmyra, and the Brain," but let's just forget about that one for now. (I thought that was just plain stupid, but it shows what happens when executive meddling forces you to obey them or get fired.)
Pinky and The Brain are genetically enhanced laboratory mice who reside in a cage in the Acme Labs research facility. Pinky is good-natured but feeble-minded, while the Brain is highly intelligent but arrogant and bitter. In each episode, Brain devises a new plan to take over the world which ultimately ends in failure; usually due to the impossibility of Brain's plan, Brain's own overconfidence, Pinky's bumbling, an oversight on Brain's part, circumstances beyond their control, or a combination thereof. In common with many other Animaniacs shorts, many episodes are in some way a parody of something else, usually a film or novel.
