MORE OLD ART TIME FROM 2009, though apparently I had the art for these done for a solid year before posting it, so this is maybe actually from early 2008? BANGING POTS AND PANS HERE WE GO HERE WE ARE IT'S SPOTLIGHTER TIME!! These are my babies and you are about to see way more of them.
I did a pretty good writeup of them on DA, so I'll just post parts of my old description!
Spotlighters are a line of primarily security-based robotics manufactured by a company known as, creatively enough, Secure Technologies. Their first and foremost function is to act as security guards; this particular type (known as Common) is built for patrolling, protecting, and otherwise keeping safe any building, person, or item assigned to them. Initially built to be sold to companies to help protect assets and data in their buildings, there has also been a more scaled-down, 'lite' line (known as Lighthunds, and visibly different) built and marketed towards individuals.
Some quick notes on features and abilities:
- Spotlighters are so named for the 'spotlight' on their tails; essential in night patrols or in dark buildings, this light source can be aimed in any direction.
- Their paws are too clumsy to be used to manipulate much of anything, so to compensate, Spotlighters have a long, prehensile tongue that can be used for anything from opening doors to picking up objects. 8]
- Spotlighters can communicate with eachother via radio signals, useful when trying to coordinate with other units in the same building. However, when around humans or other non-Spotlighters, they'll tend to just speak out loud instead.
- Upon activation, a Spotlighter's color, personality, and voice data are all randomized; these variations help differentiate various units to their human counterparts, and the individuality is seen as making them easier to 'relate' to (instead of being seen as just big, slightly furry robots <__>).
-Also! They do, in fact, have two sets of ears;both are fixed in place*, with the main ones facing forward, and a smaller rear set facing continually back. This gives them a very good sense of surround-sound hearing! *this may have been true for early models, but has possible changed to be more mobile. They tend towards this at rest though!
Spotlighters actually come in several specialized divisions, each suited to a particular task and each with a different body type; an individual Spotlighter's data can be transferred from one body-type to another as many times as needed. Common Spotlighters are technically the security ones, and there are also Medical, Maintenance, Lab and High-Security divisions as well as a handful of others.

I originally had planned to make an adopt shop on Gaia for these like I did with Project LAYHR, because I badly wanted to do another thing like it- I never got there, but put a ton of worldbuilding into these guys. I may wind up doing something more with them like that in the future! They're a bit more streamlined looking now, but you can't beat the very first intro art!
