"Wow, I can't believe it got here this quickly!"
Lawrence grabbed the package that had been delivered to his doorstep and brought it inside his house. The tiger had been skeptical at first when he saw the sale on the new online merchant for Black Friday, but it had seemed reputable enough after some research. In the end, he simply couldn't pass up the chance to get his hands on a product that promised to be on the cutting edge of the new technological wave. Rendering realistic water was already hard enough in a game, but making an entire AR game based off of an ocean environment was on a level of insanity he hardly thought possible. Even if it ended up being of questionable quality, it was worth the price of admission just to witness the attempt.
He pulled the headset from its packaging and gave an appreciative whistle. It was extremely lightweight, sleek and streamlined in design, and the lenses were completely translucent, likely attempting to avoid the possibility of immersion slipping as opaque plastic came into view. The only sign of technology was a pair of bulges on either side of the device, just above the attachment points for the harness. He was skeptical of whether there could possibly be a computer powerful enough to manage the necessary illusion in so small of a space, but he couldn't wait to put it to the test.
Thankfully, donning the headset was quite a simple task, the elastic allowing him to slip it over his face and only have to make minor adjustments to the straps once it was on. He looked around to get a feel for the weight and was again impressed by how easy it was to ignore the weight as he glanced about. At last, satisfied with his tests, he reached up to feel along the right side of the headset, looking for the power button.
The only indication that he had found it was the sudden, prominent sound of rushing water around him. Lawrence turned, only to gasp as he saw the torrent of water seemingly pouring in from all sides! His doubts about the quality were quashed immediately, as the visuals were plenty enough to produce a sensation of water permeating the outer layer of his fur. He stumbled back, then lowered himself carefully to the floor so that he would not stumble and injure himself. This wasn't just augmented reality, it seemed like fully fledged virtual reality!
This impression was so strong that, as the water around him began to reach the level of his face, he reflexively took a breath and squinted his eyes closed. Of course he knew that this was only an illusion, but it couldn't hurt to make sure! As he forced himself to open his eyes, he did not have to think to breathe despite the illusion. The world that surrounded him made him gasp in wonder!
Instead of sitting on the floor in a room of his house, he found himself floating in the middle of a deep blue ocean scene! Light filtered dimly from the surface above, casting a blue glow over the boulders and arching rocks around him. Fish swam all around, forming schools and seeming to react to their environment, and various marine plants swayed with the movement of the current, giving the entire scene an air of realism that he could barely believe!
Of course, realizing that this was merely a game was a little easier as he caught his breath and realized that he could easily breathe without a scuba tank.
Lawrence reached up to adjust the headset, and he was fascinated once more to discover that the device was part of the illusion! When he touched it, he felt the distinctive plastic and rubber texture of a simple diving mask, rather than the sleek design of the headset!
As he settled in, the tiger began to take in his surroundings, swimming a bit awkwardly at first as he envisioned how silly it must look to any observers. It was not long until he got his bearings, however, and only a brief while later that he realized the impeccable work of the game designers in his current environment. It seemed quite open, but there was no doubt that the way that the rocks were structured was intended to lead him in a certain direction, and so he followed the sea floor and arching stone structures as they steadily guided him on. Around a bend he stopped, and couldn't help but shake his head.
"Amazing."
Even his voice was muffled to increase immersion, but he was far more interested in the scene that spread out before him. A shipwreck sat in much the same way as one might expect in a game: with all the alluring suggestion of lost treasure, and no sign of a lost crew. There was even a hole left by some unknown attacker leading into the ship's hold, and Lawrence could not imagine ignoring the invisible hand inviting him inside.
He grinned as he finally spotted the payoff to his exploration. Tucked in a dark corner of the ship's hold, half obscured by shattered boards around it, was a treasure chest! The tiger was happy that the creators of the game understood the impulse of the curious gamer to go searching off the beaten path for secrets, and he was excited to discover what they had left for him to find!
Maneuvering with the natural ease that had characterized the experience to this point, the tiger swam over to the chest and carefully pulled away the boards that prevented his easy access. He chuckled when he realized that he was mentally avoiding the possibility of loose splinters, despite the fact that the boards were a fabrication of the game world. With this epiphany he moved a bit more smoothly, and quickly uncovered the curved lid of the treasure chest.
There was a moment of concern when he realized that there was a keyhole at the front of the lid, but he soon noticed that the container was already partially ajar. A frown crossed his face when he realized that this meant that someone might have taken his prize already. As he lifted the lid, however, he was pleased to see a small pile of gold and jewels, clearly rifled through at some point yet still intact enough to serve as a pleasant reward.
One item within the chest drew his attention in particular, a golden band that rested on a bed of coins, its circumference curiously large. As he took it between his hands, he realized that it was no bracelet, but instead a neckband! He raised it before him, realizing slowly that it would be a perfect fit for his own neck!
Of course it would, he chided himself; why would the game give him a treasure he had no chance to use? No doubt it came paired with some sort of ability or enchantment, and so he quickly took the chance to place it around his throat. It fit snugly, curiously adding a noticeable weight to his neck. Before he could rationalize how the game could simulate such a thing, however, he suddenly felt something tangling around his legs!
Anticipating some challenge to accompany his treasure, he tried to kick away as he twisted to investigate, but what he saw made his eyes widen. He only saw his tail and legs below him, but they seemed to have a mind of their own! Suddenly, he was only able to fitfully paddle with his arms to direct his movements. Moving was not his primary concern, however, as he realized that his lower body was beginning to change!
The end of his tail shifted, the final black ring around the tip and the accompanying tuft of white widening and spreading out into a series of what could best be described as pleats. With a blink, he realized that the pattern also resembled the fins of a fish's tail!
As though rewarding his realization, the changes suddenly surged, his tail thickening from the site of the initial changes and surging upwards.. The sight was strange enough, but the feelings were even more bizarre. It felt as though the length of his tail was being gently massaged, and once the sensation had passed he found that he was able to much more easily detect the movements of the water that surrounded him! It was clear that his fur had given way to scales, and these were perfectly attuned to life in an aquatic environment.
The surge of changes finally broke Lawrence's immersion, and he reached for the swimming goggles that were projecting the environment of the game before his eyes. There was no resistance as he pulled them free, but the results of this decision made the tiger gasp out a surge of bubbles.
"It's real!"
Lawrence's voice was muted by his underwater environment, but it was clear that the world around him had not been affected by the removal of the AR headset. In fact, the headset itself was little more than a simple swimming mask made of rubber and plastic! And that meant–
He gasped as his attention returned to his transforming tail, and the knowledge that the process was real only made the sensations much sharper. He was able to move his lower body, but the feeling of the fins had replaced that of his tail sweeping through the water, and his legs were beginning to change as well!
Each leg shrank gently into the shape of his widening tail, their shapes each altered as they withdrew. Rather than a pair of legs with paws at their ends, the two appendages had become a pair of smaller pelvic fins which now took their places just below the level of his hips! They were flexible and mobile, but no longer suitable for movement on land.
Next a ridge of fin began to rise up along the back of his tail. It was really made up of several distinct patches of fin, their color orange like the base color of his fur coat, but lighter by several shades. The fine fins swayed gently of their own accord along the back of his fast-forming fishtail, allowing him to sense movement in the water and waiting to help guide him as he swam.
Several more fins grew up from among the scales of his tail. They each appeared in pairs, producing a natural symmetry, and he gradually began to understand how to move them at will. They did little individually, but together would have a vital role in helping him swim through the ocean waves.
His transformation reached his hips at last, and in doing so gave him the opportunity to touch the scales that had overtaken his fur thus far. They formed a smooth, strong surface against his hand, repelling even the sharpness of his claws as he cautiously tested them.
At first he expected the transformation to continue upwards, but he realized after several moments that only his lower body's shape would be altered in the end. Just above his hips, a frill of decorative fin formed a line of demarcation between his feline upper half and the strong fish tail that had replaced his lower half. While the changes to his shape stopped short there, the texture of fish scales continued upwards, sweeping across his features and replacing his fur, despite retaining its general pattern. They replaced his fur along his trunk, up his neck, even along his muzzle and across his face. Only at the very top of his head did his original hair remain, a familiar decoration to a form that was otherwise completely altered.
Lawrence took in the balance of the changes in wonder as they came to their conclusion. There was a name for the creature he had become, he realized, a familiar one if not the first to come to mind unbidden.
"I'm a merman," he whispered.
His new tail shared the tiger's coloration, dark orange with black stripes on the back, the ventral surface colored white. Those scales that created the white color had an inner iridescence, however, causing them to glitter in a myriad of colors as light reflected from their surface. The paper-thin skin of his fins was also orange, though the color was at times either muted or complemented by the color of light which was able to filter through.
His mind slowly regrouped, and Lawrence found his emotions swinging from concerned to excited. No longer did he struggle to move his lower body, but it did now have a new set of rules that governed its movement. While he could not walk or swim in the ways that he was used to, he found that he had a natural understanding of how to make the best use of his fins. Cautiously, he rolled back over so that he faced the floor. Then, slowly as he learned how his body worked, he began to move in a way similar to how a dolphin might swim.
It was easy–so easy–to move like this! Water parted around him as he swam through it, the powerful fins on either side of his tail pushing water out behind him and sending him hurtling along at an amazing pace! Though he was still in the confined quarters of the ship's hold, minor adjustments of the fins that had once been legs allowed him to navigate with ease, and he curved his body to follow the contours of the ship's boards! He laughed and brought himself to a stop, easily dissipating his momentum with a gentle twist of his body.
"Did you find something?"
Lawrence was suddenly brought up short by a familiar voice, and he turned to the shattered portion of the hull that had allowed him to enter. With a blink, he found himself looking at his friend Elain! She smiled and swam through the gap, and the tiger's jaw dropped.
She was a mermaid herself! Her tan fur had been transformed into fine piscine scales, the stripes that covered her form continuing down to her fins without interruption. The cat wore a translucent sarong around her waist, and a matching top of simple cloth wrapped about her chest. She tilted her head curiously as he stared, a smile tugging at the corners of her muzzle.
"What?" she asked. "Find something you'd prefer to keep to yourself?"
"N– no. Just… wait, did you change too?"
Elain now looked thoroughly confused. "Change? You're not just trying on random clothing you found in a shipwreck are you?"
Lawrence blushed and shook his head. Of course he had done exactly that, but he had meant the other kind of change. Did she think he had always been like this?
"Come on, I think you've had enough of sunken vessels for today," Elain suggested before he could make any further comment. "Rangy is waiting for us at the Reef, and I think some open water will do you good."
She turned and glided effortlessly away with only the merest flicker of movement from her tail. Though he briefly hesitated, Lawrence followed right after, back out into the larger ocean where the AR game had started.
Was he stuck like this? Would there be a way back? He wasn't sure, but somehow it didn't concern him much. A whole new world had opened before him, and he had just the body to take advantage!
