I am working on my own homebrewed Fantasy Mexico inspired D&D Campaign set in a facsimile of the historical Spanish Conquest but dragged out longer like both sides are pretty evenly matched with the backup of Gods and Magic.
I decided to make my own group of 5 original Dragons for the setting based on some of the Aztec Gods. The Obsidian Dragon is based on 3 loosely related Aztec deities: Tezcatlipoca, Itzpapalotl, and Itztlacoliuhqui.
Tezcatlipoca's name means "Smoking Mirror", his symbol is an Obsidian Mirror, and he depicted having a magic prosthetic leg which is an obsidian mirror which constantly bellows smoke. He is a constant problem, trouble maker and trickster in Aztec mythology, usually anything that goes wrong is most likely his fault. In the creation myth of the universe he was responsible for each time the world has ended and had to be reset.
The first world was destroyed by him making it rain Jaguars from the sky
Second world he destroyed with a Hurricane
Third world he stole the Sun God's Wife, which made him so angry that he made it rain fire
And the 4th world he bullied the new Sun Goddess causing her to cry rivers of blood for 52 years and flood the world
He is also the equal opposite/Rival to Quetzalcoatl. While Quetzalcoatl brings people together and promotes the growth of civilization, Tezcatlipoca spreads discord, conflict, and tyranny.
Itzpapalotl's name means "The Obsidian Butterfly" She is depicted as a scary and fearsome warrior goddess with a big pair of Butterfly wings made of Obsidian Blades, and is leader of the Tzitzimitl, a group of scary skeletal star goddesses. However despite being scary fierce warrior ladies they are also associated with fertility, and are the protectors children who died too young caring for them in a paradise realm.
Itztlacoliuhqui name means "Curved Obsidian Blade", he is the God of Frost, but he used to be another god called Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli the Lord of the Dawn and aspect of Venus. He once tried shooting an arrow at the Sun god Tonatiuh during his reign of tyranny, but Tonatiuh caught his arrow out of the air and shot it back piercing him through the head and transforming him into the God of Frost.
The Obsidian Dragon is meant to have sharp butterfly-like wings as reference to Itzpapalotl, jaguar-like spots as reference to Tezcatlipoca, and the spots are white to reference the formation of crystals in snowflake obsidian tying it back to Itztlacoliuhqui as a god of frost. Whenever I come up with the stand-in deities for this setting I will probably try to find a way to mix these gods into one entity that created the Obsidian Dragons.
Obsidian dragons are the least friendly of the Aztec inspired dragons, known to be incredibly dangerous and deceptive, but also punish mortals for their own hubris, so they are not just evil monsters, but serve a role to keep things from stagnating and delivering their own form of justice. They have a Coldness Breath and are able to shoot Obsidian shard from their body.
