"I'm a person of two opposites. Half-Human and Half-Dragon. Its difficult living in two worlds, and while I could never live among my Human kin, I am happy to call my Dragon Realm family. I would never trade them for anything."
~ Vala, Talking to Eva about herself
Vala is a rarity in the Universe. She was born an orphan and adopted by the Artisan Dragons of the Avalar Magellanic Dwarf Galaxy at a very young age. She was found as a baby on an abandoned Human spaceship, one that wasn't of Imperial origin but belonged to a Human Tribe from the nearby Polybius Galaxy, the House of Knilin. To the dragons who found the abandoned ship, they couldn't say why it was there or why it was abandoned without any hint of being attacked or experiencing a mutation. Nobody could say what its purpose was aside from theories such as it being an exploration ship. Vala herself concluded that her human parents were explorers. A heritage that she's proud to take as her own.
Vala was adopted on the spot by the peaceful dragons on the planet of Ilninor. A pair of dragons, Argus and Devlin. They raised Vala as their own, like they would with any dragonnet. Of course, the other dragons were skeptical of the two raising a human as their own, as Humans had a reputation of being xenophobic barbarians who fought Dragonkind during the Mythic Wars. Or worse, Humans were part of the Imperial Lineage. The two parents claimed that not all humans were subservient to the Earth Empire, and it was tradition for the Artisans to care for those in need. Argus and Devlin were correct in the end as Vala would assimilate into the dragon culture as one of their kin. Like the Artisans, Vala adopted their culture of creativity and exploration, growing up to be an intelligent and curious woman of refined tastes and a love for the natural world. She would spend her youth exploring the lands of Ilninor, going to school with her fellow dragonnets. The magic of the Artisans would eventually flow inside Vala, bringing her into a state of metamorphosis when she reached the age of 4. Her former human legs were transformed into a long, dragon-like tail. Snake-like in its appearance. She was transformed into a Half-Wyrm.
Her transformation was marvelous to the Artisans. Dragonic metamorphosis is a rare anomaly associated with the bond between a Dragon and a non-dragon, where the receiver would take on some traits of a dragon. An anomaly that was only known with the Great Dragons of old. It was a sign that Vala had a great love for her parents and her adopted homeworld. Perhaps she was the only one of her kind in the sparsely populated Avalar Galaxy.
When she reached the age of adulthood, she wanted to become a proper explorer by charting the stars of Avalar and exploring every planet of every star. Even more ambitiously, she wanted to explore the Polybius Galaxy to the dread of her colleagues. She was warned that the Polybian Galaxy was a corrupt and hostile place filled known only among the Avalar Dragons for war, greed, hatred and Imperial infestations. The Polybians drove the Dragons from their homelands and scattered them across the stars. Even if the Polybians had good cause to fight the dragons, they were indiscriminate in their war against the dragons. Targeting both good and evil dragons alike. Dragonkind once protected Polybius when they called it "Eldrion" from the Earth Empire for generations until their corrupted Realms were overthrown in a revolution led by the Kingdom of Notor. Because of that, the only dragons Vala would meet are those who were the ones corrupted by their greedy ambitions. Worse of all, it would be hard for Vala to return to Avalar once she reached Polybius.
The naive and hopeful girl assured that she would return with good news. When she arrived to Utorian Star Alliance's capital of Utoria under the disguise of an alien serpent, she was awestruck by the Alliance's multicultural and advanced nature. Seeing white towering skyscrapers and the beautiful landscapes of Utoria. She quickly joined the Alliance's Universal Organization of Xenology (OUX) to explore and discover. She thought that she could prove her cynical Artisans wrong until she realized that the beautiful Alliance was in a state of political crisis. Separatists led by Arbris sought to tear down the Alliance from within. Vala found herself becoming an activist trying to preserve the Alliance's democratic system and multiculturalism to no avail while learning that not everything within the Alliance was a good as she once believed. She was even shocked to learn that the founders of the Alliance were no other than the dragonslaying Kingdom of Notor, which was then little more than a memory. Vala witnessed firsthand Arbris and Vuul's coup against the Alliance, seeing it transform into the Great Celestial Alliance. Witnessing its two-faced and hypocritical nature to bare when the new government was quick to destroy any hint of rebellion and separatism. Once equal members of the Alliance were now turned into colonies for the Celestial Systems. Witnessing this new authoritarianism firsthand was soul-crushing, but Vala also watched as the galaxy rebelled, and saw the return of the old Kingdom of Notor. Ironicly, Vala would become an ally of Notor by joining OUX's successor, the Royal Organization of Xenology (ROX).
It was there at ROX Vala met the human Eva. Vala's goal from then on was to help the people of Polybius destroy the Celestial Alliance while keeping the hordes of the Earth Empire at bay.
Only time will tell if she's successful. Even if its against overwhelming odds. Her own beloved tail is a reminder of home, and that she can try to make the galaxy a better and loving place, along with redeeming Dragonkind.

Its awesome that I've finally written a backstory for Vala. After all these years. Vala was actually one of the first characters I ever adopted!
